Women’s Tennis Edged by Lynchburg in Thriller

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Lebanon Valley women's tennis team battled back from an early deficit in a thriller with the University of Lynchburg on Monday afternoon at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Hornets came away with a 4-3 victory in a match that was decided in a third-set tiebreaker of the sixth and final singles match.
 
Lynchburg (4-1) won two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead in the match. The Dutchmen (3-2) won at number three doubles. The teams split the six singles matches, with UL winning at number one singles. LVC won on courts two, three, and five to take a momentary 3-2 lead before Lynchburg won at number four to even the score. The match came down to number six singles, where the Hornets won the first set. Laken Kelly won the second set to send the match into a tiebreaker, in which Lynchburg came out on top 10-8 for the victory.
 
Inside the Box
  • Erika Badner and Nikki Denbowski won their third consecutive double match at number three by a score of 6-1. The duo is now 4-1 on the dual season.
  • Catherine Stone rallied after dropping her first set for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) victory at number two singles to score the first point of the afternoon for LVC. She improved to 5-0 in singles play at the second flight.
  • Megan Martin tied the match at two with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number three. She is now 4-0 in dual matches this year.
  • Katie Berra continued her strong play as she improved to 4-0 at number five singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
  • Kelly went three sets at number six, dropping a heartbreaking 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) decision. It was the fourth three-set match of the sophomore's career and the first this season.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be off on Tuesday and will return to the courts on Wednesday with two matches in Hilton Head. LVC will take on Roanoke College at 8:30 a.m. back at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in the first match of the day. They will then face Saint Vincent College at 6 p.m. under the lights of May River High School.
