Hevelow Scores Game-High 20 Points in Battle at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lebanon Valley women's basketball senior Riley Hevelow scored a game-high 20 points, including 16 in the second half, as the Dutchmen saw a second-half rally fall just short in a 49-43 defeat at DeSales University on Wednesday evening at Billera Hall in Center Valley.

The Dutchmen (15-5, 6-3 MAC Freedom) got off to a slow start offensively against the Bulldogs (14-6, 8-1 MAC Freedom). DeSales scored the first eight points of the game, holding the Dutchmen scoreless for the first seven minutes. The Bulldogs scored all four of their buckets in the paint. Hevelow put the Dutchmen on the board with a pair of made free throws. DSU answered with a layup before Hevelow pulled up in the middle of the paint for her first field goal of the game. The Bulldogs made a mid-range jumper, and then Hevelow found Megan Albrecht down low for a layup to make it 12-6. DeSales knocked down a jumper in the paint to take an eight-point lead after the opening quarter.

Brielle Reidinger began the second quarter with a bucket just inside the left lane line. After consecutive turnovers, DSU countered with a layup. Adrianna Stricek got the deficit down to five with a free throw and a baseline jumper following a Hevelow steal. The Bulldogs responded with a three-pointer and then a layup to go up 21-11 with 5:27 on the clock. Reidinger made the back end of two free throw attempts before the Bulldogs scored on another layup. Kailey Eckhart and Reidinger made back-to-back buckets in the paint to get LVC within seven with just under two minutes to play in the half. Neither team was able to score over the final 1:50, and DSU took a 23-16 advantage into the break.

DeSales scored a minute into the third quarter to begin the second-half scoring. Reidinger knocked down a turnaround jumper in the paint to answer the score at the other end. The teams traded steals before the Bulldogs made a free throw to take a 26-18 lead. Alexa Holcomb found Hevelow open for a layup before the Bulldogs scored four consecutive points to go up by 10 with four minutes on the clock. Holcomb got the deficit down to eight with a layup. DSU countered with a pair of free throws. Eckhart put back an offensive rebound while being fouled and made the shot at the line to get LVC within five at 32-27. The Bulldogs responded with three made free throws before Hevelow hit a step-back jumper in the middle of the paint off a pass from Reidinger. Neither team scored over the final minute of the quarter as the Bulldogs took a 35-29 lead into the fourth.

Stricek scored the first points of the final quarter as Hevelow found her open on the left side 90 seconds into the quarter. DeSales scored the next three points to go up by nine with six minutes to play. A minute later, Hevelow knocked down a big three-pointer on the left wing off a pass from Albrecht. The senior then connected on another three-pointer on the right wing off a feed from Abbie Reed to cut the deficit to three at 40-37 with 4:15 left. The teams traded missed jumpers until the Bulldogs hit a pair of free throws with 2:43 left. Hevelow was fouled and made both of her shots at the line to answer. DeSales responded with a three-pointer to go up by six with two minutes left.
