Women’s Ice Hockey Opens Conference Play with Win at Stevenson

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team received contributions from several players in its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opener, as the program earned a 5-2 victory over Stevenson University behind a strong team effort on Friday, Nov. 6, at the Reisterstown SportsPlex.

Leela Nemani netted the game-winning goal for LVC, while Abby Mak scored a game-high two goals. Addi Alaoui and McKayla Romano each found the net for the Flying Dutchmen as well. Defensively, goaltender Savannah Alexander delivered a 40-save performance.

The Mustangs (0-1-0, 0-1-0 MAC) generated some offensive opportunities early in the first half, but the Dutchmen (1-1-0, 1-0-0 MAC) responded with five saves by Alexander during the first 4:26. Lebanon Valley's offense followed this with six shots over the next 5:17.

The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring 10:40 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. Romano got the program on the board by sending the puck into the back of the net for a goal, courtesy of assists by Anna Dale and Evvy Finch. Stevenson had a 4-3 advantage in shots during the remainder of the frame, and Alexander tallied four more stops for LVC.

Lebanon Valley was aggressive offensively at the beginning of the second period, outshooting the opposition 9-3 during the first 7:10. In this stretch, LVC started a power play in the sixth minute, which led to five shots on target during the first 1:31 that the squad had a one-skater advantage. The Dutchmen capitalized on this opportunity at the 7:18 mark, going ahead 2-0 on a power-play goal by Mak. Addison Taylert and Dale were credited with assists on the second goal of the night.

The Mustangs later got on the board 11:13 into the second period, narrowing their deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal by Jalyn Jones when the team had a 5-on-3 advantage in skaters. The programs proceeded to go back and forth over the next 4:54, as each team logged three shots that were saved. Lebanon Valley then outshot the opposition 5-0 over the next 2:41, including shots by Taylert and Mak that were saved during a power play. Stevenson began a power play in the 19th minute, and Alexander came through with a save for LVC during this stretch.

The Dutchmen started another power play during the first minute of the third period, and the program took advantage of the extra skater by extending their lead to 3-1. The team went ahead by two when Nemani netted a power-play goal at the 1:38 mark, after an assist by Alaoui. The Mustangs started a power play in the ninth minute and trimmed their deficit to 3-2 at the 10:06 mark on a power-play goal by Molly McCabe, when the program had a 5-on-3 advantage in skaters.

Lebanon Valley got this tally back 13:12 into the third period, taking a 4-2 lead on a goal by Alaoui. Sophia Scatena was credited with an assist on the team's fourth goal. Stevenson then went on a power play in the 15th minute, and the Flying Dutchmen answered with a block by Dale and five saves by Alexander during a successful penalty kill. The Mustangs later pulled their goalie and drew two penalties to have a 6-on-3 advantage in skaters. Stevenson brought the puck toward the net, and Mak cleared it for LVC, and sent the puck to the opposite net for a short-handed, empty net goal at the 17:31 mark. The goal by Mak extended Lebanon Valley's lead to 5-2, which would stand as the final score.
