HOBOKEN, N.J. – In a battle for first place in the MAC Freedom standings, the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team traveled to Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon and battled the Ducks for 60 minutes before falling 3-0.
The Dutchmen showed resilience throughout the contest, led by a standout performance from goalkeeper
Ella Weidenhammer, who kept LVC within striking distance with an impressive 22-save effort. Stevens controlled much of the possession early, but Weidenhammer turned away shot after shot, including six saves in the opening quarter as the Dutchmen held the hosts off the scoreboard through the first 27 minutes.
Stevens broke through with 2:18 remaining in the second quarter to take a 1-0 lead into the break. The Ducks added a pair of goals in the third period, but the Dutchmen continued to compete defensively, blocking several scoring opportunities and limiting further damage despite sustained pressure.
Lebanon Valley looked to generate momentum in the fourth quarter and earned a penalty corner with just over six minutes remaining.
Claire Weidenhammer provided the Dutchmen's best offensive chances of the day, recording both of LVC's shots, including one on goal early in the final frame.
Defensively, the Dutchmen were anchored by
Ella Weidenhammer's career-high 22 saves and a strong team effort in front of her that produced multiple defensive blocks against a Stevens attack that generated 39 shots and 18 penalty corners.
Lebanon Valley will look to rebound on Wednesday, October 28, as they host DeSales University in the final home game of the regular season at Arnold Field. A win over the Bulldogs would clinch the two-seed and a home semifinal game in the MAC Freedom Championships. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Arnold Field.
