King's Edges LVC Football in MAC Battle

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.—King's College relied on a balanced offensive attack and delivered clutch defensive stops in a 21-10 defeat of Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at McCarthy Stadium.

King's (2-3, 2-3 MAC) opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, but LVC answered on its ensuing possession. On second-and-10, Jayden Stanfield broke a run up the middle for a 65-yard touchdown. Connor Hazel added the extra point to knot the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

The Monarchs started the second quarter with another long touchdown drive, this time 84 yards that burned nine minutes off the clock, to pull back in front 14-7. Later in the quarter, after forcing a three-and-out from King's, the Flying Dutchmen ran an effective two-minute drill. Osmany Guzman connected with Blake Weaver, Makih Cooper, and Ethan Heisey, and added a few of his own running plays to move LVC into field goal range. Hazel drilled a field goal from 42 yards to make the score 14-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, LVC's defense shut down a King's drive with a key tackle for loss by Jacob Karkoska. On the next possession, Stanfield's legs and another Heisey reception drove the Dutchmen across midfield, but the King's defense stood tall on fourth-and-1 at the Monarch 43, shutting down a quarterback sneak.

King's took advantage of the short field to build its lead to 21-10 early in the fourth quarter. Facing third-and-14 at midfield, quarterback Jaelin Mims scrambled and found Kival Clarke who raced down the sideline for a 39-yard gain. Four plays later, King's Joey Rehberg punched it in from one yard out.

After the teams traded possessions, LVC called on Owen Strouse who connected with Stanfield on a 43-yard pass play that put the Dutchmen inside the King's 30 midway through the final quarter. Receptions by Harrison Delissaint, Trey Freeman, and Stanfield helped LVC advance into the red zone, but on third-and-5 from the King's 12, Jayson Howarth sacked Guzman for a 14-yard loss. The Monarchs sniffed out LVC's fake field goal attempt and took over on downs.
