Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Dutchmen Men’s Ice Hockey Posts Important Win Over Arcadia

HERSHEY, Pa. – Anton Petrovskiy and Max Kontir both scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team in the third period, securing the program's big 3-1 victory over Arcadia University on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Hersheypark Arena. John King also found the net for LVC during the win.

The Dutchmen (6-12-2, 6-8-2 MAC) and the Knights (7-10-3, 4-9-3 MAC) battled defensively early in the contest, as each team put just two shots on goal during the first 9:01 of the first period. Arcadia began a power play in the fifth minute during this stretch, and LVC answered with a block by Collin Nolan and a save by goaltender Chris Branch during a successful penalty kill. Lebanon Valley then started a power play in the 11th minute, which led to Cameron Croteau putting a shot on target that was saved at the 11:35 mark.

Branch kept working to limit the opposition as the first period progressed, logging four more saves for the Flying Dutchmen over the next 5:13. During this stretch, Ian Lindberg generated an offensive opportunity for LVC with a shot that was saved at the 13:53 mark. Lebanon Valley later opened the scoring 18:02 into the first frame, taking a 1-0 lead. The program struck first when King sent the puck into the back of the net for a goal, courtesy of assists by Owen Ames and Cade Helmer. This was followed by the Knights beginning a power play with just under two minutes left in the first. The Dutchmen started a successful penalty kill with two saves by Branch and a block by Lindberg during the remainder of the period.

Lebanon Valley continued to produce defensively when the second period got underway, as Branch made three saves within 17 seconds in the second minute. Arcadia then began a power play in the fourth minute, and LVC prevented the opposition from putting a shot on goal during another successful penalty kill. The Flying Dutchmen also started a power play in the seventh minute, prompting Ames to take two shots that were saved, while Lukas Washco had one attempt saved. Jordan Stear and Joey Pankowski also contributed to the team's offensive efforts, putting a shot on target each within 10 seconds in the 11th minute.

The Knights began another power play in the 11th minute of the second period, and the Dutchmen posted a successful penalty kill with three saves by Branch and a block each by Stear, Ames, and Petrovskiy. The teams proceeded to go back and forth defensively for over six minutes, as neither side put another shot on goal until Helmer's try was saved at the 19:19 mark. Lebanon Valley also started a power play with just 16 seconds left in the frame, and Mason Proskin created a scoring chance with a shot that was saved as time expired.

The Flying Dutchmen and the Knights also competed on the defensive end at the beginning of the third period, as each program had three shots saved during the opening 7:01. LVC's first shot during this stretch was tallied while the squad was finishing a power play, as Petrovskiy had a try saved at the 1:40 mark. Lebanon Valley's defensive dominance also continued, as the team kept Arcadia from attempting a shot during a power play that started at the end of the 10th minute. Branch followed this by delivering a pair of saves for the Dutchmen within 38 seconds in the 13th minute.

The programs traded shots as the third period rolled on, as each squad registered two attempts that were saved during the next 2:17. The Knights then got on the scoreboard 17:22 into the final frame, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by Bryce Battaglia. Lebanon Valley quickly responded at the 18:05 mark to reclaim the lead, going ahead 2-1. The team went up by one when Petrovskiy scored a clutch goal, following assists by Pankowski and Washco. Arcadia countered with a shot on goal at the 19:08 mark, but Branch came through with a key save for LVC. The Knights then pulled their goalie with 52 seconds to go, before a penalty 27 seconds later prompted the squad to have a 6-on-4 advantage in skaters. However, the Dutchmen tacked on an insurance point with just 12 seconds remaining, prompting 3-1 to be the final score. The program sealed its victory when Kontir netted a short-handed, empty net goal after assists by Croteau and Stear.
