Brielle Reidinger recorded her sixth double-double of the year and
Kailey Eckhart poured in a career-high 22 points as the Dutchmen dropped a hard-fought 68-57 decision at Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon in Glenside.
The Knights (10-6, 3-1 MAC Freedom) score the first points of the game off a backdoor pass. The Flying Dutchmen (11-4, 2-2 MAC Freedom) answered as Eckhart drove to the hoop and scored, and then
Alexa Holcomb found Reidinger open underneath the rim for another layup. Arcadia countered with a three-pointer before Eckhart backed her defender down in the paint for a layup. The Knights scored to retake the lead, and Reidinger hit a pair of layups off offensive rebounds to make it 10-7 in favor of the Dutchmen. The teams traded buckets as Eckhart scored another basket down low.
Arcadia cut to lead back down to one on a pair of free throws. Reidinger stole the ball and found Hevelow cutting to the rim in transition, but the senior guard was fouled. Hevelow knocked down both free throws to put LVC up 14-11 with 3:17 on the clock. Neither team scored again until a little over a minute left, when Arcadia tied the game with a three-pointer. LVC answered with a left-wing three-pointer by Hevelow off a cross-court pass from Reidinger. The Knights worked the ball up court and hit a three-pointer right before the buzzer to even the score after one.
The Knights started the second quarter with a steal and a bucket at the other end. Holcomb scored on a layup off a nice pass from Eckhart. Arcadia then used an 11-0 run over the next 2:20 to take a 30-11 lead. The knights scored on four consecutive possessions and made three three-pointers while holding the Dutchmen scoreless during the run. Hevelow ended the run with a driving layup to make it a nine-point game with 5:30 to go in the half. The teams traded missed shots over the next two minutes until Eckhart backed her way into another layup.
Arcadia responded with a second-chance bucket. Reidinger knocked down a jumper in the paint with two minutes left on the clock. The Knights got to the line and made one of two free throws. LVC got to the line in the closing seconds of the half, and
Megan Albrecht hit one of two shots. The Knights grabbed the rebound on the second shot and raced the ball up the court before hitting a deep three-pointer just inside half-court as time expired.
LVC started the second half with
Abbie Reed finding Eckhart down low for a layup. The Knights answered with a three-pointer. Holcomb made a shot at the line, and after a stop, the junior guard drove to the rim for two points. The teams traded layups as Eckhart drove to the hoop for the Dutchmen. Arcadia countered with another big run, scoring the next 10 points over the next three minutes to take a 51-33 lead with 4:28 left in the quarter.
Hevelow ended the drought with a pair of shots at the line. The Knights answered at the other end before Reidinger drove through the lane for a layup. LVC forced a turnover, and Eckhart hit two shots at the line. The Dutchmen came up with another stop, and Eckhart drilled a three-pointer near the top of the key off a pass from Hevelow to cut the deficit down to 11 at 53-42. Arcadia answered with a three-pointer at the other end. Holcomb scored a pair of layups in the final minute to get the deficit back down to 10 at 56-46 heading into the final quarter.
The teams locked down on defense to begin the fourth quarter as neither team scored over the first two minutes. The Knights scored on a jumper in the paint for the first points of the quarter. Eckhart scored another layup, and Hevelow made one of two shots at the free-throw line. The Knights countered with a pair of free throws before Eckhart hit Reidinger streaking to the hoop for a layup.
Arcadia pushed the lead up to 13 with a three-pointer and a made free throw with 4:37 to play. The Dutchmen scored a minute later as
Megan Albrecht scored in the paint. The Knights answered with a jumper at the other end of the court to make it 66-53 with 2:35 remaining. Neither team scored again until Eckhart made two shots at the line with 36 seconds left. The Knights scored their final two points of the game at the line before Eckhart hit a layup off an inbound pass from Reed to end the game.
Inside the Box
- Reidinger recorded the 34th double-double of her career with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The senior pulled down seven rebounds on the offensive glass to give her 61 offensive rebounds in 15 games this season.
- Eckhart scored a career-high 23 points and dished out two assists. The senior was 9-for16 from the floor and 4-for-5 at the line with one three-pointer. She has scored over 20 points twice this year.
- Hevelow scored 10 points with five of her points coming at the line. The guard dished out one assist, grabbed one rebound, and recorded one steal.
- Holcomb had nine points and four rebounds while shooting 4-for-4 on field goals.
- Reed grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot. Albrecht had six rebounds and scored three points.
- The Dutchmen scored 40 points in the paint and had 19 points off 15 Arcadia turnovers. Offensively, LVC committed 10 turnovers.
