Dutchmen Men’s Ice Hockey Opens Series Against Misericordia

HERSHEY, Pa. ­­– Max Kontir won a game-high 12 faceoffs for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a 5-0 contest to Misericordia University on Friday, Jan. 16 at Hersheypark Arena. 

Each program generated offensive opportunities at the beginning of the first period, as the Dutchmen put six shots on goal that were saved while the Cougars had five attempts saved within the first 6:48. Lebanon Valley then started a power play during the eighth minute, which led to Kontir and Cody Walker each tallying a shot that was saved in this stretch. Misericordia later began a power play in the 10th minute, and LVC responded with four saves by goaltender Jadon Lee during a successful penalty kill. 

This was followed by the teams going back and forth, as neither squad put a shot on target for over two minutes after the Cougars' power play concluded. Lee also kept working to limit the opposition as the first period progressed, posting saves at the 13:52, 14:14, and 15:54 marks. Lebanon Valley's defense then delivered four more stops by Lee, and blocks by Aidan Bright and Tanner Tolliver over the next 2:17. The Flying Dutchmen later registered the last shot of the opening frame, as Kontir sent a puck toward the net that was saved with 1:22 left. 

Lebanon Valley created some scoring chances early in the second period, as John King, Cade Helmer, and Lukas Washco each put a shot on goal that was saved within the first 2:27. The teams followed this by competing on the defensive end, as neither side put another shot on target for three minutes. The Dutchmen then came through with four saves by Lee and blocks by Peyton Myers, Jesse Shogan, and Bright over the next 3:35. 

LVC's offense generated an opportunity when Troy Andrews took a shot that was saved 10:46 into the second period, before the squad logged eight attempts that were saved during the following 5:38. On the defensive end, Lee also made three saves for the Flying Dutchmen during this stretch. Misericordia then opened the scoring 17:58 into the second frame, taking a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by William Moran. Lebanon Valley later began a power play in the last minute of the stanza, which led to Owen Ames and Helmer each putting a shot on goal that was saved during the final six seconds. LVC outshot the Cougars 14-8 in the second period.

The Dutchmen concluded their power play at the start of the third period, and Ames sent a shot toward the net that was saved 49 seconds into the frame. Cameron Croteau contributed to the program's offensive efforts as well, putting a shot on target that was saved at the 1:48 mark. Misericordia then started a power play in the fourth minute, and Jordan Stear took a shot for LVC while the team was short-handed. Ames also blocked a shot, and Lee made a save for Lebanon Valley during a successful penalty kill. Lee later tallied a stop at the 6:34 mark after the programs returned to even strength. King, Mason Proskin, and Andrews impacted the defensive efforts of the Flying Dutchmen as well, tallying a block each during a 19-second stretch that started in the seventh minute. Walker then created a scoring chance with a shot at the 9:02 mark, which was saved.

Lee kept battling as the final frame went on, making two saves for the Dutchmen within 16 seconds in the 10th minute. Misericordia then scored on a goal by Corbin Scheibel at the 10:51 mark and a goal by Jack Tos at the 11:21 mark, taking a 3-0 advantage. Lebanon Valley later had a 5-on-3 advantage, leading to Helmer and Kontir putting a shot on goal each that was saved within 37 seconds in the 16th minute. Stear also had two attempts saved within four seconds in the 17th minute, while LVC had a 5-on-4 advantage. The Cougars then added to their lead with an empty net goal by Scheibel at the 19:15 mark and a goal by Jaron Ketterman at the 19:37 mark, prompting 5-0 to be the final score.

The Dutchmen will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m., when the program will host the Cougars again at Hersheypark Arena. This will be Lebanon Valley's Team IMPACT Game for Jamie Reynolds, the program's Team IMPACT Teammate.
