Penner Records Double-Doubles at Messiah Tri-Match

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Lebanon Valley senior Mattea Penner had a double-double with kills and digs in both matches as the volleyball squad dropped a pair of tough defeats at Messiah University on Saturday. The host Falcons defeated the Dutchmen 3-0 and Salisbury University earned a 3-1 victory.
 
Match vs. Messiah
Penner started the match off with a point from Sofia Okronley. The Falcons scored eight of the next nine points to take an 8-2 advantage. Brooke Olejniczak recorded a point before Messiah went on another run building the lead up to 13-4. The teams traded points with Penner adding two more points in the set. Messiah used a 5-2 run to get the score to 20-9., They closed out the set with five of the final six points to win 25-11.
 
The Falcons won three of the first four points in the second set. Libby Lindau and Riley Mack had back-to-back points to tie things up. Messiah countered back with the next eight points. The Dutchmen fought back and were able to cut the deficit to five at 15-10 following two Penner points. Messiah scored nine of the next 10 points and were able to close out the set by a score of 25-12.
 
The Dutchmen came out firing in the third set scoring the first five points. Penner started the set with a point and Teaguen Reynolds had back-to-back points on a kill and then a block assist with Jillian Jefferys. Messiah answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead. The Falcons built the advantage to 10-7 before back-to-back points from LVC made it a one-point set. MU won seven of the next eight points to get the lead up to 17-10. Reynolds and Penner combined for the next three points before Messiah scored three in a row to get to 20. The Dutchmen fought right back with a great run of five straight points. The deficit, however, was too much to overcome as Messiah scored five of the next nine points to take the set 25-21.
 
Inside the Box
  • Penner had 10 kills and 11 digs.
  • Jefferys finished with five kills and two block assists.
  • Reynolds had three kills and two block assists.
  • Lindau recorded four kills and one block assist.
  • Kylie Nagle led the team with 14 digs.
  • Okronley had 18 assists and five digs.
Match vs. Salisbury
The Sea Gulls scored first and had six of the first 10 points of the match. Jefferys recorded a pair of points to get the Dutchmen within one at 5-4 before Salisbury was able to increase their lead to 8-5. The Dutchmen battled back as Jefferys and Penner scored points to cut the deficit back down to one. The Sea Gulls then used an 8-1 rally to build the lead up to eight. LVC countered with three of the next four points before Salisbury scored four straight points. The Dutchmen received points by Lindau and Reynolds before the Gulls were able to take the set by a score of 25-15.
 
The second set began strong for LVC winning five of the first eight points. The Gulls responded with seven consecutive points to take a 10-5 advantage. The lead grew to 14-7 when Jasmine Sullivan and Lindau recorded a block. Penner had a point followed by a SU attack error to cut the deficit to 15-10. Salisbury scored nine of the next 11 points to get to set point. LVC scored the next two points on a pair of errors before the Gulls were able to get the point they needed to take the set 25-14.
 
LVC came out with another great start to a set scoring six of the first 10 points. A pair of points from Penner grew the lead to 9-4. The Sea Gulls rallied to tie the set at 10. LVC answered right back with a strong 7-3 run to retake the lead. Points from Lindau, Sullivan, and Penner got the Dutchmen to 20 first with a five-point advantage. The lead was at 22-17 following a Nagle ace. The Sea Gulls scored the next five points to tie the set before a Penner point and back-to-back attack errors gave LVC the set win at 25-22.
 
Jefferys began the fourth set with a point. The Sea Gull scored 12 of the next 14 to build a sizeable lead. A Lindau point and a Casey Levan service ace sandwiched a SU error to cut the lead in half. The Gulls responded with the next eight points to make it 20-6. They closed things out with five of the next seven points to take the set 25-8.
 
Inside the Box
  • Penner led the Dutchmen in kills with 13 and digs with 12.
  • Jefferys had seven kills while Lindau added four.
  • Okronley recorded 12 assists and six digs while Sullivan had 11 assists.
  • Nagle added seven digs to her season total.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will have a big home conference match on Tuesday as defending conference champion Stevens Institute of Technology makes the trip to Annville. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Sorrentino Gymnasium in a rematch of last year's MAC Freedom Semifinals.
