Dutchmen Volleyball Sweeps Hood in Balanced Performance

FREDERICK, Md. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team got contributions from all over the court as the Dutchmen earned their first win of the season with a strong 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) victory over host Hood College on Tuesday evening inside the Volpe Athletic Center in Frederick, Maryland.
 
Mattea Penner gave LVC (1-3) the early lead as she put home a set from Sofia Okronley for the first point of the match. Hood (2-1) kept it close early in the first set and tied the set up at four after being down 3-1. The Dutchmen responded with three consecutive points including a service ace by Riley Mack. The Blazers scored the next two points before LVC used a big 7-2 run that was capped off by back-to-back points from Mack to open a 14-8 advantage. The teams traded points until Hood scored three straight points to cut the deficit down to 17-14. Libby Lindau started a run of three straight points for the Dutchmen to get to 20 first. The Blazers countered with a 6-1 run to get within one. LVC answered right back with the final four points ending on a Penner service ace to win the set. Mack had three of LVC's 10 kills in the set while Okronley dished out 10 assists.
 
Okronley began the second set with two service aces. The teams traded points back-and-forth until the Dutchmen held a 5-3 lead. Jillian Jefferys began a string of seven consecutive points to give LVC a commanding advantage in the set. Mack had a pair of points during the run while Sofia Rios recorded a service ace. Hood ended the streak with a block assist before Lindau recorded another point, and Mack had an ace to put the Dutchmen up by 10. The Blazers were able to cut into the lead and were down 16-9 when four straight points for the Dutchmen including two aces from Penner made it an 11-point advantage. Hood once again put together a string of points to cut the deficit to six. Penner, Lindau, and Mack had three consecutive points to put the Dutchmen on the verge of winning the set. Okronley and Lindau ended the set with a big block assist as LVC took a two-set lead. Mack once again led the team with three of the nine kills in the set. The team had six aces led by Penner and Okronley with two each. Okronley added seven more assists to her total.
 
The Blazers scored the first two points of the third set to hold their only lead of the evening. The Dutchmen answered with five of the next eight points to even the set at five. A service error from Hood gave LVC the lead and the Dutchmen added three more points to go up by four. Okronley and Lindau had a block assist during the rally while Penner recorded her second point of the set. Hood responded with a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 11-9. LVC answered right back with four straight points highlighted by the strong play of Jefferys with two kills and a block assist with Margaret Cole. The Dutchmen were able to fight off a run by the Blazers with three straight points ending on a Rios ace to take a 19-12 lead. Hood countered with a 5-1 run to get within three at 20-17 but that was as close as they would get as LVC scored five of the next six points to close out the set and the match. Lyla Arfanella had an ace and Okronley ended the match on an ace. Penner led the squad with four of the eight kills in the set while Okronley had six assists.
 
Inside the Box
  • Mack had a season-high seven kills on 14 attacks with no errors. The sophomore added a career-high two aces and a career-high nine digs.
  • Penner also had a match-high seven kills with three aces and one block assist for a match-high 10.5 points. The senior also had a team-high 11 digs.
  • Okronley finished with 23 assists, a season-high three service aces, five digs, and a career-high three block assists.
  • Jefferys added six kills, one block assist, and one dig.
  • Lindau had five kills and a team-high four block assists. The junior equaled her career-high in block assists.
  • The Dutchmen hit a season-high .181 and recorded a season-high 13 service aces.
  • LVC improved to 15-0 all-time against the Blazers with the victory.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will head to New Jersey on Saturday Sept. 6 for a tri-match at Montclair State University. LVC will take on Baruch College at 2 p.m. in the second match of the afternoon before facing the host Red Hawks inside the Panzer Athletic Center.
