Dutchmen Softball Wins MAC Freedom Title with Victory Over Misericordia

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– The top-seeded Lebanon Valley College Softball team won its second consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship with a thrilling 2-0 victory over third-seeded Misericordia University in game seven of the conference tournament on Saturday, May 3, at the LVC Softball Park. 

The programs battled in two games on Saturday, as Misericordia won the first contest 9-1 in five innings to force the deciding game seven. Bella Mackison and Lexi Smith each drove in key runs for the Flying Dutchmen during the victory, helping the program clinch the title. Abby Reed also delivered a complete-game shutout for Lebanon Valley in the pitching circle, en route to earning MVP honors for the 2025 MAC Freedom Championship. 

Game One 
The Cougars (29-13) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on a two-run single and a play that included a single and an error. The Dutchmen (28-13) responded with a run in the bottom of the first, narrowing the score to 3-1. The club got runners on first and second base with one out after Smith drew a walk and Holly Grube hit a single to third base. Maddy Gronback followed this with an RBI double down the right-field line, plating Smith. 

Misericordia added four runs in the top of the second, taking a 7-1 advantage on an RBI single up the middle, a two-run triple to right-center field, and an RBI single to left-center field. The Cougars then hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning, making it an 8-1 game. In the top of the fourth, Maycee White entered the game to pitch for the Flying Dutchmen and tossed a scoreless frame. The first-year notched the third out of the inning with a flyout to Smith in center to strand a runner at first base. 

Misericordia hit an RBI single through the right side in the top of the fifth inning, advancing the score to 9-1. Lebanon Valley continued to battle at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, as Megan Heard led off the frame with a single to left field and Smith hit a single to shortstop. The Cougars proceeded to maintain their lead through the end of the inning, securing the run-rule victory. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Gronback hit a double to mark her third straight game with a hit while driving in a run.
  • Smith recorded a hit, a walk, and a run scored. This marked the senior's third consecutive game crossing the plate. 
  • Grube registered a base hit to extend her hitting streak to 10 games, and a hit-by-pitch. 
  • Erin Pattillo picked up a hit to extend her hitting streak to 12 games. The senior also stole a base for her third consecutive contest. 
  • Heard tallied a walk and a base hit.
  • Reed struck out a batter in 1.2 innings of relief. 
Game Two 
Lebanon Valley (29-13) was considered the visiting team in the second matchup. Reed got the game started with a scoreless bottom of the first inning against Misericordia (29-14) in the pitching circle. The first-year recorded the final two outs of the frame with a flyout to Pattillo in left field and a flyout to Smith in center field, stranding a runner at first base. The Dutchmen then opened the scoring in the top of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Julia Craig got into scoring position by driving a double to center field before coming home on Mackison's RBI single to center field.

Reed blanked the Cougars in the bottom half of the second, retiring the side in order with a popout to Grube at second base, a groundout that the pitcher fielded herself, and a groundout to Heard at shortstop. Reed also pitched a shutout bottom of the third inning for the Flying Dutchmen, notching the third out of the frame with a popout to Heard at shortstop to leave a runner at first base. Reed then continued her strong start in the bottom of the fourth, keeping the opposition off the board with a flyout to Smith in center field, a foul out to Craig, and a lineout to Smith in center to strand a runner at first. 

Lebanon Valley kept working to generate traffic on the basepaths in the top of the fifth inning, as Pattillo led off the frame with a single to shortstop and stole second base while Grube drew a walk. Misericordia had a runner on second base with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but LVC got out of the inning with a flyout to Pattillo down the left-field line. Reed followed this with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, logging a lineout to Heard at shortstop, a popout to Mackison just in front of home plate, and a strikeout swinging. 

The Dutchmen tacked on an important insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, taking a 2-0 advantage. Heard started a two-out rally with a single up the middle before pinch-runner Lauren Foster got into scoring position by stealing second base. Smith then came through with a clutch RBI double down the left-field line, knocking in Foster. Reed then secured the MAC Freedom Championship for LVC in the bottom of the seventh, recording a lineout to Grube at second base, a strikeout looking, and a flyout to Smith in right-center field to strand the leadoff runner at first base. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley won its second straight MAC Freedom Championship, earning its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament. 
  • Reed improved her record to 12-4 this season, striking out two batters during her third complete-game shutout of the campaign. The first-year pitcher earned MVP honors for the MAC Freedom Championship by recording two wins, a save, and eight strikeouts while posting a 1.58 ERA in 17.1 innings during the conference tournament.
  • The Dutchmen outhit the Cougars 9-4. 
  • Mackison hit an RBI single in the top of the second, which proved to be the game-winning hit.
  • Smith tied a game-high and season-high two hits with a game-high and career-high two doubles. The senior also knocked in a key insurance run. 
  • Craig hit a double and scored what proved to be the game-winning run. 
  • Foster stole a base and scored a run. 
  • Heard tied a game-high two hits. 
  • Pattillo logged a hit to extend her hitting streak to 13 while stealing a base for a fourth straight game.
  • Grube tallied a base hit to extend her hitting streak to 11, a walk, and a stolen base. 
  • Nicole Kratz picked up a hit.

Lebanon Valley will await the results of the selection show for the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament to see where they will play in the NCAA Regionals. The selection show will be held on Monday, May 12.
