ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College Baseball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, fueling the club's exciting 17-13 victory over Arcadia University in the first matchup of its doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at McGill Field. LVC then dropped the second matchup by a score of 12-2 in eight innings.
The Flying Dutchmen received contributions from several members of their lineup during the win, as nine players drove in runs and 10 crossed the plate.
Logan Brewer and
Kenny Palmieri helped lead the offense, knocking in three runs each. In the second contest,
Jace Fetterman hit two home runs to tie the program record for career homers. Saturday also marked Senior Day for eight of the club's veterans: Fetterman, Brewer,
Duncan Weir,
Andrew Spaan,
Sam Dozier,
Justin Ranker,
Jeremy Tuz, and
Malachi Duka.
Game One
Jacob Detwiler started on the mound for the Dutchmen (21-17-1, 13-7 MAC Freedom) and pitched a scoreless top of the first inning against the Knights (23-14, 13-7 MAC Freedom), picking up a strikeout in the process. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Brewer came to the plate with the bases loaded with no outs and hit an RBI single through the right side, plating
Owen Berry.
Kody Phillips followed this with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Fetterman. Later in the frame,
Carter Enders delivered a two-out two-run single up the middle, knocking in
Spencer Butz and Brewer.
Arcadia countered with a solo home run to right-center field in the top of the second, narrowing the score to 4-1. The Flying Dutchmen got this run back in the bottom half of the second, taking a 5-1 advantage. Palmieri led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch and moved up to third base after a steal and a wild pitch. Berry then hit an RBI single to right-center field, scoring Palmieri. The Knights followed this with a three-run home run to right-center field in the top of the third inning, trimming their deficit to 5-4. Lebanon Valley added another run in the bottom of the third, going up 6-4. Phillips led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a groundout and a sacrifice bunt by Enders. Phillips then came home to score on a passed ball.
Michael Williams entered the game to pitch for LVC in the top of the fourth and blanked the opposition, recording a lineout to Phillips in left field to strand a runner at first base. The Dutchmen continued their offensive production in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 7-4 lead.
Dylan Mennillo led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and later advanced to third on a groundout, before crossing the plate on Butz's two-out RBI single up the middle. Arcadia responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game at 7-7 on an RBI double to left-center field, a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI fielder's choice to shortstop.
Lebanon Valley answered back with a big 10-run bottom of the fifth, going ahead 17-7.
Tyler Satterfield quickly reclaimed the lead for LVC by leading off the frame with a solo home run over the left field wall. Palmieri then drove an RBI double to left-center field, plating Enders. Mennillo followed this by reaching on an error during a sacrifice bunt attempt, allowing Palmieri to come home. Later in the inning, Butz came through with an RBI single to center field to score Mennillo. Brewer kept the offense rolling with a two-run double down the right-field line, knocking in Fetterman and Butz. This was followed by an RBI single down the right-field line for
Ryan Murphy, bringing in Brewer. Palmieri also continued his strong day in the batter's box with a two-run double to left-center field, scoring Murphy and Enders. Mennillo capped off the club's key frame with an RBI single down the right-field line, driving in Palmieri.
Duka came out of the bullpen for the Dutchmen in the top of the sixth, registering two strikeouts during a shutout inning. The Knights then plated six runs in the top of the seventh inning, narrowing the score to 13-7 after two bases-loaded walks, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a two-run single up the middle, and a sacrifice fly that Palmieri caught in foul territory down the right-field line. Berry moved from shortstop to the mound in the seventh and went on to secure Lebanon Valley's victory, notching the final out with a flyout caught by Mennillo at shortstop.
Inside the Box Score
- Lebanon Valley outhit Arcadia 17-10. The club also tied a season-high 15 RBIs.
- Brewer recorded two hits with a double while recording three RBIs and scoring twice. This marked the senior's 11th consecutive game with an RBI. Additionally, Brewer walked and stole a base.
- Palmieri logged two hits with a game-high and career-high two doubles while tying a game-high and career-high three runs scored and matching a career-high three RBIs. The junior was also hit by a pitch and stole a base.
- Butz tied a game-high three hits to mark a season-high while tallying two RBIs, two runs scored, a hit-by-pitch, and a stolen base.
- Berry had two hits, marking his ninth straight game with a base hit. The junior also recorded an RBI for a third consecutive game and scored a run for a 12th straight game. Additionally, Berry walked and stole a base. On the mound, the junior earned his third save of the year by picking up a pair of outs in the top of the seventh inning.
- Enders registered two hits with a double, a walk, and two runs scored while matching a season-high two RBIs.
- Mennillo tied a season-high two hits with a double while driving in a run and tying a season-high two runs scored.
- Satterfield hit his first home run of the season.
- Phillips logged a base hit, an RBI, and a run scored, marking his fourth straight game with a tally in each of these categories.
- Murphy also had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. This marked the graduate student's 158th career game, tying Nico Santoro for the program record in games played.
- Fetterman tallied a base hit to extend his hitting streak to nine while drawing a walk and scoring two runs. The catcher also threw out a runner attempting to steal.
- Detwiler struck out a game-high four batters.
- Williams tallied a strikeout in his relief outing.
- Shaffer earned his second win of the season, tallying a pair of outs.
- Duka struck out three batters.
Game Two
Trey Dianna was Lebanon Valley's (21-18-1, 13-8 MAC Freedom) starting pitcher in the club's final regular season matchup and the sophomore posted a zero against Arcadia (24-14, 14-7 MAC Freedom) in the top of the first inning, tallying a strikeout during the frame. The Dutchmen then struck first in the bottom half of the first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Knights after Fetterman drove a solo home run over the right-center field wall. Dianna followed this by retiring the side in order in the top of the second, registering a strikeout looking, a lineout to Berry at shortstop, and another strikeout looking.
Arcadia went ahead in the top of the third inning, taking a 3-1 advantage on a two-run home run and a solo home run. The Knights then added three runs in the top of the fourth, going up 6-1 after a two-run double and an RBI single. This was followed by Arcadia hitting two RBI singles in the top of the fifth inning, making it an 8-1 game. The Knights also scored three in the top of the sixth to advance the score to 11-1, during a frame that included two RBI singles and an RBI triple.
The Dutchmen put another run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, making it an 11-2 contest after Fetterman launched a solo homer over the right-center field wall.
Landon Sexton came in to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the top of the seventh inning, and the reliever tossed a scoreless frame by notching the final two outs with a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. Arcadia then hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning, taking a 12-2 lead. This would stand as the final score, as the Knights maintained their advantage through the bottom of the eighth for a run-rule win.

- Fetterman hit two home runs for his first career multi-homer game, marking his sixth and seventh blasts of the season. These home runs bring the senior's career total to 26, which is tied with Shane Stossel for the LVC program record. Fetterman's two-homer effort also extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Additionally, the senior walked for a third consecutive contest. The catcher threw out a runner attempting to steal as well.
- Mennillo picked up a base hit to extend his hitting streak to three while stealing a base.
- Satterfield drew a walk.
- Dianna and Spaan tied for a game-high four strikeouts in their appearances on the mound.
