Dutchmen Baseball Wins Series Against FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. ­­– Owen Berry recorded a game-high three RBIs for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team in the first matchup of its doubleheader, leading the club to a dominant 13-4 victory over FDU-Florham on Saturday, April 19, at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. The win helped LVC clinch a spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship. The Flying Dutchmen also battled valiantly in the second contest while dropping a 9-6 game. 

Game One 
The Dutchmen (19-15-1, 12-5 MAC Freedom) struck first with a five-run top of the first inning, taking an early 5-0 lead over the Devils (13-21, 5-12 MAC Freedom). Owen Berry led off the game with a walk and Jace Fetterman singled, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Spencer Butz then drove a two-run triple to right-center field, plating Berry and Fetterman. Kody Phillips followed this by lining an RBI single to center field, knocking in Butz. Later in the frame, Carter Enders hit an RBI double to left field to score Phillips. The club's big inning was capped off by Kenny Palmieri's RBI triple to right-center field, driving in Enders. 

Jacob Detwiler started on the mound for LVC and delivered a scoreless bottom of the first, notching the third out with a strikeout looking. Detwiler also blanked FDU-Florham in the bottom of the second, striking out the first two batters swinging before stranding runners on first and second with a popout to Berry at shortstop. Lebanon Valley then added two runs in the top of the third inning, extending their advantage to 7-0. The club loaded the bases after Tyler Satterfield singled up the middle, Palmieri singled through the right side, and Dylan Mennillo walked. LVC scored its first run of the frame when Berry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Satterfield. Fetterman followed this with a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Palmieri.

Detwiler continued to limit the opposition in the bottom of the third inning, leaving runners on first and second base after recording the last two outs with a flyout to Phillips in left field and a flyout to Butz in center field. Detwiler then pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth for LVC with a flyout to Butz in center field, a strikeout swinging, and another flyout to Butz in center. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by crossing the plate again in the top of the fifth inning, going up 8-0. Fetterman got into scoring position with a double down the left-field line and the senior was driven in by Logan Brewer's RBI single through the right side. The Devils responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, narrowing the score to 8-4 with two RBI singles and two bases-loaded walks.

Lebanon Valley got one of these runs back in the top of the sixth, taking a 9-4 lead. Berry came to the plate with runners on first and second base with one out and came through with an RBI single through the left side, knocking in Enders. Reliever Blair Shaffer followed this with a zero for LVC in the bottom of the sixth, logging a flyout to Butz in center field, a strikeout swinging, and a popout to Mennillo at second base. 

The Dutchmen tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh, making it a 13-4 ballgame. Satterfield stepped into the batter's box with runners on first and second base with one out and hit an RBI single to right-center field, bringing in Brewer. Enders followed this with an RBI single back to the pitcher, allowing Duncan Weir to score. After a pitching change, Palmieri hit an RBI single through the right side to plate Satterfield. Berry then capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Enders. Shaffer proceeded to close out Lebanon Valley's 13-4 victory in the bottom of the seventh, pitching a scoreless frame by fielding a groundout himself before a flyout to Palmieri in right field, and a groundout to Enders at third base. 

Inside the Box Score
  • The victory marks LVC's fifth consecutive series win against a MAC Freedom opponent. 
  • Lebanon Valley extended its winning streak to eight games while marking its seventh consecutive game scoring 10 or more runs.
  • The Dutchmen outhit the Devils 16-10.
  • Berry recorded a hit to extend his hitting streak to five while tallying a game-high three RBIs to tie a career-high. The junior also had a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a run scored. Additionally, Berry has crossed the plate in each of his last eight games and driven in a run in each of his past three.
  • Palmieri had a game-high four hits with a triple to tie a career-high in hits, extending his hitting streak to seven. The junior also tied a season-high two RBIs while scoring a run, walking once, and stealing a base. 
  • Fetterman tied a season-high three hits with a double to mark his fifth consecutive multi-hit game. The senior also tallied an RBI for a fifth straight contest while scoring a pair of runs, marking his seventh game in a row crossing the plate. The catcher also threw out a runner attempting to steal second base in the bottom of the first. 
  • Enders had two hits with a double to extend his hitting streak to three while tying a season-high two RBIs and scoring a game-high and season-high three runs. The first-year also drew a walk for a third consecutive game and was hit by a pitch. 
  • Butz hit his first triple for LVC while registering two RBIs. The junior also scored a run for a sixth straight game and tied a game-high two walks. 
  • Brewer tallied two base hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games while knocking in a run for a seventh consecutive game and scoring a run. The senior's RBI marked the 100th of his career. Brewer also drew a walk. 
  • Satterfield picked up two hits with an RBI while scoring twice. 
  • Phillips had a base hit, an RBI, and a run scored. 
  • Weir logged a hit while crossing the plate once. 
  • Mennillo tied a game-high two walks. 
  • Detwiler struck out four batters in four innings on the mound, improving his record to 4-1.
  • Shaffer tallied two strikeouts in three scoreless frames of relief. 
Game Two 
Lebanon Valley (19-16-1, 12-6 MAC Freedom) continued its strong day at the plate when the second matchup got underway, taking a 1-0 lead over FDU-Florham (14-21, 6-12 MAC Freedom) in the top of the first inning. Butz got things started with a two-out single to second base before being driven in by Brewer's RBI double to left field. Starting pitcher Hunter Williams then retired the side in order in the bottom of the first with two swinging strikeouts and a foul out to Brewer at first base. The Devils followed this by getting on the board in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-1 advantage on a two-run single through the right side. 

The Dutchmen answered back with three runs in the top of the third inning, going ahead 4-2. The program loaded the bases with walks by Berry, Fetterman, and Brewer, and Phillips took advantage of the opportunity with a one-out RBI single through the right side to score Berry. Enders followed this with a sacrifice fly to center field, knocking in Fetterman. Palmieri then hit a ball to shortstop and reached on a throwing error, allowing Brewer to score. In the bottom half of the third, Williams tossed a 1-2-3 frame with a strikeout swinging, a groundout to Berry at shortstop, and a flyout to Butz in center field. 

FDU-Florham scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 9-4 lead on a two-run triple, a bunt RBI single, a three-run home run, and an inside-the-park home run. Reliever Malachi Duka then pitched a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning for Lebanon Valley, registering a strikeout swinging to strand runners on first and second base. The Flying Dutchmen crossed the plate again in the top of the sixth, trimming their deficit to 9-5. Joey Santora led off the inning with a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before coming home on Fetterman's RBI ground-rule double to right field.

Andrew Spaan entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the bottom half of the sixth and posted a 1-2-3 frame, recording a flyout to Palmieri in right field, a groundout to Berry at shortstop, and an unassisted groundout to Brewer at first base. The Dutchmen then added another run in the top of the seventh inning, narrowing the score to 9-6. Phillips led off the frame with a double down the left-field line and later came home to score on Palmieri's RBI ground-rule double to right-center field. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Spaan retired the side in order for Lebanon Valley with a groundout to Berry at shortstop and two swinging strikeouts. Spaan also blanked the opposition in the bottom of the eighth by fielding a bunt himself for a groundout before a strikeout swinging and an unassisted groundout to first base. Ultimately, FDU-Florham maintained its lead through the end of the game. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Phillips tied a game-high and season-high three hits with a double while picking up an RBI and a run scored. 
  • Fetterman tallied two hits with a double to mark his sixth consecutive multi-hit game. The senior also had an RBI for a sixth straight contest while crossing the plate for an eighth consecutive game. Fetterman drew a walk as well. 
  • Brewer hit a double to extend his hitting streak to eight games while driving in a run for an eighth consecutive game. The senior also walked and crossed the plate for a third straight contest. The run Brewer scored was the 100th of his career. 
  • Butz tallied a hit to extend his hitting streak to three while scoring a run for his seventh game in a row. The junior also had a game-high two walks and a stolen base.
  • Palmieri hit a double to extend his hitting streak to eight while recording an RBI. 
  • Enders registered a base hit to extend his hitting streak to four while knocking in a run for a third straight game. 
  • Berry had a hit to extend his hitting streak to six while scoring a run for a ninth consecutive game. The junior also drew a walk. 
  • Santora logged a base hit to extend his hitting streak to three while scoring a run for a third straight game and walking for a fourth consecutive contest. 
  • Weir drew a walk.
  • Williams struck out a game-high four batters.
  • Duka tallied three strikeouts in 1.1 shutout innings of relief. 
  • Spaan fanned three batters in three scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
