ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College Softball team clinched the top seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship with two walk-off victories over FDU-Florham, winning the first matchup 6-5 in eight innings before taking the second game 3-2 on Thursday, April 17, at the LVC Softball Park.
The Flying Dutchmen secured the No. 1 seed with the doubleheader sweep, which means the club will host the conference tournament. LVC won the first contest of the twin bill when
Lauren Foster stole third base and scored on an error, while
Julia Craig hit a walk-off RBI single in game two.
Game One
The Devils (18-13, 4-5 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run double to right field. The Dutchmen (19-10, 10-1 MAC Freedom) answered right back in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 2-2.
Holly Grube led off the frame with a single through the left side before
Lexi Smith bunted a single through the left side, putting runners on first and second base with no outs.
Maddy Gronback then evened the score by driving a two-run double off the bottom of the center-field fence, plating Grube and Smith.
FDU-Florham had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the second, but Lebanon Valley got out of the inning with a groundout to shortstop
Megan Heard. The Flying Dutchmen followed this by crossing the plate once in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-2 advantage. The club started a two-out rally with a bunt single to third base by
Erin Pattillo and a single to left field by Grube, putting runners on first and second. Smith then lined an RBI single to left field, knocking in Pattillo.
In the pitching circle, Grube retired the side in order in the top of the third inning with two groundouts to third baseman
Nicole Kratz and a flyout to right fielder
Mackenzie Willey. The Devils then had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fourth, but Grube got the Dutchmen out of the jam by fielding a ground ball and throwing home for the force out before a strikeout swinging. FDU-Florham later scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 4-3 lead on an RBI single through the right side and an RBI double to right-center field.
The Devils added another tally in the top of the sixth, going up 5-3 on an RBI single to right-center field. FDU-Florham also had runners on the corners with no outs later in the sixth, but Lebanon Valley got out of the inning with a triple play. The Flying Dutchmen began this impressive play when Willey caught a flyout in right field and threw home to Gronback, who fired the ball to Heard to tag out the runner attempting to advance from first to second base. The runner on third base then tried to score and Heard threw this runner out at the plate to complete the triple play.
Abby Reed followed this by pitching a shutout top of the seventh inning for LVC, registering a strikeout swinging and two popouts to Heard at shortstop for a 1-2-3 frame. The Dutchmen then battled at the plate in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game at 5-5, sending the matchup into extra innings. Willey led off the frame with a single to right-center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pattillo before Grube hit a ball to second base and reached on an error to put runners at the corners. Gronback later came to the plate with two outs and lined a clutch two-run triple down the right-field line, driving in Willey and Grube to even the score.
FDU-Florham had runners on first and second base with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Lebanon Valley got out of the frame with a popout to Grube at second base to maintain the tie. The Dutchmen followed this by crossing the plate in the bottom of the eighth, securing a 6-5 walk-off victory.
Bella Mackison led off the frame with a walk and Foster, the pinch-runner, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Craig. Foster then stole third base and the throw from the Devils' catcher went into left field, allowing the first-year to score the winning run.

Game Two
Reed pitched for Lebanon Valley (20-10, 11-1 MAC Freedom) and posted a zero in the top of the first inning, recording a double play and foul out that Mackison caught behind the plate. Reed also blanked FDU-Florham (18-14, 4-6 MAC Freedom) in the top of the second, logging a popout to Grube at second base, a strikeout swinging, and a popout to Heard at shortstop. The first-year pitcher then continued her strong start for LVC by retiring the side in order in the top of the third inning, registering a foul out to Craig at first base, an unassisted groundout to Craig, and a flyout to Grube at second base.
The Dutchmen got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third, taking a 1-0 lead over the Devils. The program loaded the bases with a walk by Reed, a bunt single to the pitcher by Pattillo, and a single to left field by Smith. Gronback then drew a walk with the bases full, plating Reed. In the top of the fourth, Reed delivered another scoreless frame with a popout to Grube at second base and two flyouts to Smith in center field. Lebanon Valley followed this by tacking on another run in the bottom of the fourth, going ahead 2-0 when Willey drove a solo home run over the left-center field fence.
FDU-Florham countered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, tying the contest at 2-2 with an RBI double to left-center field and an RBI single to left field. Reed then tossed 1-2-3 top of the sixth for Lebanon Valley with a lineout to Kratz at third base, a flyout to Pattillo in left field, and a flyout to Smith in left-center field. The Flying Dutchmen also continued to compete in the batter's box as the game went into the bottom of the sixth, as Willey hit a single to left field and pinch-hitter
Nikki Sellers singled to left-center field with two outs.
Reed kept working to limit the Devils' lineup in the top of the seventh inning, retiring the side in order again with a groundout to Kratz at third base, a lineout to Heard at shortstop, and a flyout to Pattillo in left field. The Dutchmen then put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh and delivered their second walk-off win of the day, securing a 3-2 victory. Gronback got things started with a two-out single through the right side and Kratz hit a single to center field, putting runners on first and second. Craig followed this with a walk-off RBI single to center, driving in Foster, who entered the game as a pinch runner.

- Lebanon Valley clinched the top seed in the conference tournament with the victory, marking the team's second consecutive MAC Freedom Regular Season Championship. The win also extended the club's winning streak to 10 games.

The Flying Dutchmen will return to action on Monday, April 21, when the team will travel to take on Lycoming College in a doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex Softball Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The first matchup is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
