Great Start Powers Women’s Lacrosse to 17-8 Road Win

DALLAS, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Women's Lacrosse team outscored host Misericordia University 7-0 in the first quarter in a 17-8 victory over the Cougars on Wednesday at Mangelsdorf Field in Dallas.
 
The Dutchmen (11-4, 5-0 MAC Freedom) clinched a MAC Freedom Semifinal home game with the victory and a DeSales loss to Stevens. The Cougars (5-9, 3-2 MAC Freedom) held LVC without a shot on the first possession of the game and then had a save on a free position shot by Bethany Cohee. Molly Whisler scored a little over a minute later on a free position shot to put the Dutchmen up. Elizabeth Morgan made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal before the Dutchmen used a strong push with four goals in a three-minute span.
 
LVC took advantage of the first card of the game as Morgan found Whisler for a woman-up goal with a little over seven minutes on the clock. 28 seconds later Alyssa Wene scored her first goal of the game. Chloe Moser won the following draw and after working the ball around for 50 seconds, Emily Beard hit Morgan over the middle for her second goal of the game. Morgan then completed her hat trick with 4:28 left on a pass from Katie DeWitt to make it 6-0. Whisler scored with 20 second remaining in the quarter off a feed by Wene to push the lead to 7-0 after one.
 
The Cougars got on the board with the first goal of the second quarter on a free position shot with 12:37 on the clock. LVC responded with a goal by Wene. Misericordia scored again to make it 8-2 before the Dutchmen scored three times in the final 5:30 to take an 11-2 halftime lead. Whisler started the run with her third goal of the game off a feed by Bead. The Dutchmen took advantage of another card as Morgan scored a woman-up goal with Beard recording another assist to make it 10-2. Wene scored on a free position shot to send the Dutchmen into the break with a nine-goal advantage.
 
The first half of the third quarter was a defensive battle as neither team scored until the Cougars found the back of the net on a free position shot with 7:37 left. The Cougars added a woman-up free position goal three minutes later to cut the deficit to seven. LVC answered with a quick pair of goals by Beard and Morgan with Beard recording another assist to get the advantage back up to nine at 13-4. Wene had her free position shot saved with 1:26 on the clock and then Morgan had a shot saved in the final minute.
 
The Dutchmen briefly got the game to a running clock as Whisler scored a woman-up goal off a feed by Jenna Davis to make it 14-4 early in the quarter. Misericordia won the following draw and scored to cut the lead back down to nine. The Cougars added a pair of goals over the next three minutes to make it a 14-7 game as LVC called a timeout. The Dutchmen came out of the timeout strong and Wene eluded defenders and scored to push the lead to eight. The Cougars answered with a goal two minutes later, but Wene countered right back with a free position goal.  Beard scored the final goal of the game with just under three minutes to play off an assist by Cohee.
 
Inside the Box
  • Morgan finished with six points on five goals and one assist. The sophomore scored five goals for the third consecutive game. She scored her 50th career goal in the game.
  • Wene also had six points on five goals and an assist. The senior won five draw controls and picked up two ground balls.
  • Beard was the third Dutchmen with six points on two goals and four assists. She also won three draw controls.
  • Whisler scored five goals for the second time this season. She scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive game.
  • Cohee, DeWitt, and Davis had an assist each.
  • Allison Keeney led the team with six ground balls and added one caused turnover and one draw control.
  • Chloe Moser had a game-high eight draw controls and picked up three ground balls. She recorded her 100th draw control of the season and leads the team with 105.
  • Anna Ridlon had a team-high two caused turnovers.
  • LVC outshot the Cougars 38-18 including 14-3 in the first quarter. The Dutchmen put 32 of their shots on goal.
  • The Dutchmen won 19 of the 29 draw controls and held a 22-15 advantage in ground balls.
  • LVC extended its winning streak to 10 over the Cougars including four wins in Dallas.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be off this weekend and will return to action next Wednesday with the final home regular season game of the year against FDU-Florham. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. against the Devils in the team's Hidden Opponent Game.
