Dutchmen Softball Defeats Concordia in Extra-Inning Battle

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ­­Megan Heard recorded four hits and three RBIs for the Lebanon Valley College Softball team against Concordia University Wisconsin, helping lead the program to a big 8-7 victory in nine innings on Friday, March 7, at DiamondPlex Field A. Erin Pattillo played a key role in the win, delivering a clutch, go-ahead RBI single for the Flying Dutchmen in the top of the ninth inning. Earlier in the day, LVC battled against No. 9 Trine University and dropped an 8-0 decision in six innings at DiamondPlex Field D. 

Game One vs. No. 9 Trine
The Thunder (8-4) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run double to left field. The Dutchmen (4-3) then put a couple of runners on base in the bottom half of the first, as Holly Grube hit a single through the left side and Julia Craig singled back to the pitcher. Grube was Lebanon Valley's starting pitcher and posted a scoreless top of the second, recording the final out on a fielder's choice. Trine followed this by adding another run in the top of the third inning, taking a 3-0 advantage on an RBI single up the middle. 

Grube pitched another shutout frame in the top of the fourth, registering a strikeout swinging, a foul out to third baseman Nicole Kratz, and a groundout to Heard at shortstop. The Flying Dutchmen continued to battle at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, as Mackenzie Willey and Emily Mitchel both hit two-out singles up the middle. Maycee White then entered the game to pitch for LVC in the top of the fifth inning and posted a zero, logging the final out of the frame with a strikeout looking. 

The Thunder later scored five in the top of the sixth, making it an 8-0 game on a sacrifice fly to left field and a grand slam to right-center field. Lebanon Valley kept battling in the batter's box until the final out, as Bella Mackison hit a single down the first-base line with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Grube tied for the team lead in base hits with two. The first-year also struck out two batters during four innings of work. 
  • Mitchell tallied a career-high two hits, matching the most for LVC. 
  • Craig hit a single in the bottom of the first. 
  • Willey tallied a base hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. 
  • Mackison recorded a single in the bottom of the sixth. 
  • White had a strikeout in two innings of relief. 
  • Maddy Gronback drew a walk. The catcher also caught a runner attempting to steal. 
Game Two vs. Concordia (Wis.)
The Falcons (5-5) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to second base. Starting pitcher Abby Reed then tossed a scoreless bottom of the second for the Dutchmen (5-3), recording a flyout to center field, a groundout to shortstop, and a strikeout swinging. Lebanon Valley got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, tying the game at 1-1. Heard led off the frame with a single to left field and stole second base, before advancing to third on a groundout. Heard later crossed the plate on an RBI groundout to second base by Craig. 

Concordia added a run in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 2-1 advantage on an RBI double to right-center field. The Flying Dutchmen responded with three in the top of the fourth, going ahead 4-2. The program loaded the bases on a single through the left side by Mackison, a single down the left-field line by Willey, and a single through the right side by Katie Muller. Nikki Sellers followed this with an RBI single to right-center field, driving in Mackison. Heard then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Willey. The big frame was capped off with an RBI single up the middle by Grube, scoring Muller. 

Reed posted a zero for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the fourth inning, retiring the side in order with a lineout to Pattillo at third base, a flyout that was caught by Heard, and a groundout to third. The Falcons then scored three in the bottom of the fifth, going up 5-4 on a sacrifice fly to center, an RBI single through the left side, and an RBI single down the right-field line.

The Dutchmen answered back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 6-5 lead. The club got the rally started by putting runners on second and third base with two outs. Pattillo reached on an error and got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Willey and a wild pitch, while Muller walked before advancing to second on a groundout. Heard then came through with a big two-run single, knocking in Pattillo and Muller. White followed this by pitching a scoreless bottom of the sixth for Lebanon Valley, registering a double play and a lineout to third base. 

Concordia crossed the plate again in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk, tying the game at 6-6. The score remained even at the end of the seventh inning, prompting the contest to go into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Flying Dutchmen added a tally to go ahead 7-6. Pattillo began the extra inning on second base and later came home to score when Erin Field hit a ball to shortstop and reached on an RBI fielder's choice. The Falcons responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single, tying things up at 7-7.

Lebanon Valley continued to battle in the batter's box in the top of the ninth inning and put another run on the board, taking an 8-7 lead. Craig began the frame on second base and later came home to score on a clutch RBI single up the middle by Pattillo. Grube then closed out the victory in the pitching circle for the Dutchmen in the bottom of the ninth inning, recording a groundout to shortstop, a strikeout swinging, and a groundout to third base.

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley's lineup recorded a season-high 15 hits. 
  • Pattillo recorded a season-high two hits and tied a career-high two runs scored. The senior also had the go-ahead RBI in the top of the ninth inning.
  • Heard posted a career-high four hits while tying a career-high three RBIs. The junior also stole a base. 
  • Grube tied a season-high three hits with a double while registering an RBI and a walk. The first-year also earned her second win of the year, recording two strikeouts without allowing an earned run in 2.2 innings. 
  • Muller tied career-highs with two walks, two hits, and two runs scored. 
  • Mackison tied a season-high two hits and scored a run. 
  • Sellers picked up a base hit and an RBI.
  • Craig had an RBI, and a run scored. 
  • Field tallied an RBI. 
  • Willey registered a base hit, and a run scored. 
  • Craig had an RBI, and a run scored. 
  • Reed struck out three batters in 4.1 innings.
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will be back in action at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, when the team will take on Ursinus College at Fortune Road Field 2 in Kissimmee, Florida. The Dutchmen will then compete against Western New England University at 11:15 a.m. on the same field to wrap up their trip to Florida.
