Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with Victories Over Allegheny and Illinois

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ­­– The Lebanon Valley College Softball team recorded two wins behind some key hits and solid pitching, defeating Allegheny College 7-3 and notching a 3-2 victory over Illinois College on Tuesday, March 4, at DiamondPlex. The Flying Dutchmen received contributions from several players, as six batters tallied RBIs while starting pitchers Abby Reed and Maycee White each earned wins. 

Game One vs. Allegheny 
The Dutchmen (3-2) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Gators (3-2). Megan Heard led off the game with a walk before Lexi Smith hit a single to shortstop, and a throwing error allowed Heard to advance to third base. Smith then stole second base for LVC, putting runners on second and third. Nicole Kratz later hit a sacrifice fly that the shortstop caught in left field, driving in Heard. Reed started in the pitching circle for Lebanon Valley and recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the first with an unassisted groundout to first base and a pair of strikeouts swinging. 

Reed also held Allegheny in check in the bottom of the second inning, stranding a runner at second base by notching the final two outs of the frame with strikeouts looking. The first-year continued her strong pitching performance as the contest entered the bottom of the third, retiring the side in order with a groundout to shortstop, a strikeout swinging, and a groundout to third base. 

The Flying Dutchmen also kept putting together quality at-bats as the game progressed, crossing the plate three more times in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 4-0. Kratz led off the frame with a triple to center field before coming home to score on an RBI double to left-center field by Bella Mackison. Later in the inning, Emily Mitchell hit a two-run double to left field to drive in Mackison and Holly Grube. The Gators then began the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double, but Reed proceeded to get out of the inning with a flyout to right field, a popout to second, and a flyout to left. 

Lebanon Valley tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to 7-0. Smith led off the inning with a bunt single to third base and got into scoring position by stealing second. Kratz then hit an RBI ground-rule double to center field, plating pinch runner Maddie Russell. Mackison followed this with an RBI ground-rule double to left field, knocking in Kratz. Grube capped off the frame with an RBI triple to left-center field, scoring Mackison. Allegheny then got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, making it a 7-1 game on an RBI single up the middle.

The Gators also added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, narrowing the score 7-3 on an RBI single through the left side and an RBI groundout to second base. The Flying Dutchmen then secured their four-run victory in the bottom of the seventh, as Grube retired the side in order with a groundout to third base, a strikeout looking, and a groundout to second base during a relief appearance.

Inside the Box Score
  • Lebanon Valley's lineup had 10 hits with seven extra base hits. The team tallied five doubles and two triples. 
  • Grube registered a game-high and season-high three hits with a double and the first triple of her career. The first-year also had an RBI and scored her first career run while stealing a base. Grube also struck out a batter during 1.2 scoreless innings of work. 
  • Mackison recorded a game-high two doubles, marking the first two of her career. The first-year also tied game-highs and set season-highs with two RBIs and two runs scored while drawing a walk. 
  • Kratz picked up two hits with a double and her first career triple, while recording a season-high two RBIs to tie a game-high. The junior also tied a game-high two runs scored, which is a season-high as well. 
  • Mitchell hit her first career double and had a season-high two RBIs.
  • Reed earned her first career win, striking out a season-high six batters in 5.1 innings.
  • Heard walked and scored a run. 
  • Russell scored her first career run. 
  • Smith tied a season-high two hits and had a game-high and season-high two stolen bases. 
  • Erin Pattillo stole a base as well. 
  • Julia Craig competed in her 166th career game, becoming LVC's all-time leader in games played. The graduate student broke the program record that was previously held by Tessa Deardorff.
Game Two vs. Illinois
White delivered a scoreless top of the first inning for Lebanon Valley (4-2), recording the first out with a popout to shortstop before getting out of the frame with an around-the-horn double play. White then kept Illinois (2-4) scoreless in the top of the second with three groundouts. The Dutchmen opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second, taking a 2-0 lead over the Lady Blues. Maddy Gronback led off the inning with a single to center field and later came home to score on Pattillo's RBI single to left-center field. Pattillo then got into scoring position by stealing second base, before crossing the plate on Erin Field's RBI single to right-center field. 

White kept working to hold the opposition in check as the contest entered the top of the third inning, registering a popout to third base, a popout to shortstop, and a flyout to left field. The first-year pitcher posted another zero for Lebanon Valley in the top of the fourth inning, retiring the side in order with a flyout to center, a popout to shortstop, and a groundout to third base. The Flying Dutchmen then added a run in the bottom of the fourth, going ahead 3-0 on a play where Lauren Foster stole second base and Field stole home.

Illinois got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing the score to 3-1 on an error. The Lady Blues then scored again in the top of the sixth, making it a 3-2 contest on an RBI single to right field. Lebanon Valley later secured its 3-2 victory in the top of the seventh inning, as Grube pitched a scoreless frame by recording two strikeouts swinging and getting the final batter to line out to first baseman Caroline Hinkelman

Inside the Box Score
  • Pattillo recorded a base hit, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. 
  • Field logged a career-high two hits while picking up her first RBI for LVC and scoring a run. The junior also walked and stole home. 
  • Gronback tallied a career-high three hits while scoring a run. 
  • Grube drew a walk at the plate. The first-year also earned her first career save by striking out three batters without allowing a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings. 
  • White improved her record to 2-0 this season, registering a strikeout in 5.2 innings.
  • Kratz tied a career-high two walks. 
  • Foster stole a base. 
Up Next
The Flying Dutchmen will return to the field at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, as the program will take on Trine University at DiamondPlex Field D in Winter Haven, Florida. Lebanon Valley will then face off against Concordia University Wisconsin at 6:30 p.m. at DiamondPlex Field A.
