Six Dutchmen Record RBIs for Baseball in Battle at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md.  Carter Enders and Spencer Butz both recorded a pair of RBIs to lead six players who drove in runs for the Lebanon Valley College Baseball team, as the club dropped a hard-fought 10-9 contest to Stevenson University on a walk-off single on Wednesday, March 12, in Owings Mills.

Gaven Schreier started on the mound for the Dutchmen (5-8) and began his afternoon with a shutout bottom of the first inning, retiring the side in order with a groundout to shortstop, a foul out to first base, and a strikeout swinging. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the top of the second, taking a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs (4-10). The team loaded the bases with no outs after Logan Brewer drew a walk, Enders hit a single to right field, and Christian Vanelli bunted a ball back to the pitcher and reached on an error. This was followed by Joey Santora being hit by a pitch with the bases full, bringing home Brewer.

Stevenson countered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 2-1 advantage on an error and an RBI single to right field. The Dutchmen answered back with five in the top of the third, going ahead 6-2. The club once again loaded the bases with no outs, and tied the game when Enders hit an RBI single to left field to plate Jace Fetterman. Vanelli was then hit by a pitch with the bases full, bringing in Kody Phillips. Dylan Mennillo later hit a ground ball to the third baseman, who threw home for the force out, before the catcher threw the ball past the first baseman while attempting to complete a double play. This error allowed Enders to score. LVC's big frame was capped off with Butz's two-run single to left field, driving in Vanelli and Mennillo.

The Mustangs responded with a two-run double to left-center field in the bottom of the third, narrowing the score to 6-4. The Flying Dutchmen got these two runs back in the top of the fourth inning, extending their lead to 8-4. Phillips started things by drawing a one-out walk, and the first-year later came home to score when Brewer drove an RBI triple to center field. Enders followed this by hitting an RBI single to second base and advancing to second on an error, allowing Brewer to cross the plate.

Tony Bennage then pitched a scoreless bottom of the fourth for LVC, recording a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout swinging, a popout that Santora caught in foul territory, and another strikeout swinging. Jaden Click entered the game to pitch for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the fifth and retired Stevenson in order with a pair of groundouts to shortstop by Owen Berry and a flyout caught by Butz. The Mustangs later scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the contest at 8-8 on an RBI single to left field, a two-run double to left-center field, and an RBI double down the right-field line.

Jordy Polanco came out of the bullpen to pitch for the Dutchmen in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order, logging a flyout to center field, a foul out to third base, and a strikeout swinging. Lebanon Valley put another tally on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning, going up 9-8. Mennillo came up to the plate with runners on the corners with two outs, and the sophomore hit a clutch RBI single to center field to knock in Enders. Stevenson then evened the score at 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth on a bunt RBI groundout, which was fielded by pitcher Hayden Fravel. The Mustangs later won the game 10-9 in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off RBI single down the right-field line.
