ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Women's Lacrosse team broke open a close game by outscoring visiting Lycoming College 6-1 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Warriors 19-13 on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Arnold Field.
The Dutchmen (1-1) outscored the Warriors (0-1) in three of the four quarters and had six different goal scorers. Lycoming won the opening draw and scored on the first possession of the game. Lebanon Valley struck right back as
Bethany Cohee found
Molly Whisler over the middle for the tying goal. The Warriors responded with a woman-up goal after a LVC card. The Dutchmen scored the next three goals in a span of two minutes to take the lead. Cohee assisted on all three goals as she found Whisler and then
Emily Beard twice to put LVC in the lead. Lycoming scored after a timeout to cut the lead to one after just five minutes of action. Cohee then scored her first goal of the season off an assist by
Elizabeth Morgan to give the Dutchmen a 5-3 advantage.
The teams battled over the next eight minutes with neither team scoring until LVC ended the quarter with three goals over the final 90 seconds. Beard and Cohee scored a pair of woman-down goals as the Dutchmen were fighting off a card. Cohee assisted on Beard's goal before
Alyssa Wene found Cohee and then Beard in the final minute to give the Dutchmen an 8-3 advantage after one quarter.
Lycoming scored the first goal of the second quarter after three scoreless minutes. Wene won the ensuing draw and was fouled before scoring her first goal of the game on a free position shot. The Warriors scored the next two goals before Wene scored unassisted with 4:40 remaining in the half to push the lead to 10-6. After a Lycoming goal, the Dutchmen ended the half strong with three goals in the final three minutes to take a 13-7 halftime lead. Morgan scored all three goals for the Dutchmen including a woman-up goal with just under a minute left. Whisler and
Kyla Hebert had assists on the first two goals.
The third quarter belonged to the Warriors as they scored five goals and held the Dutchmen scoreless to cut the advantage down to 13-12. Lycoming had an 8-5 shot advantage in the period. The Dutchmen won four of the six draw controls during the first 15 minutes of the second half but had seven turnovers and put three of their five shots wide of the goal.
LVC came out firing in the fourth quarter and Cohee found Beard for the fourth time in the game for a goal a little under 90 seconds in. The game remained 14-12 until Cohee scored a free position goal with just under eight to play. The Dutchmen won the next draw and Whisler assisted on a Wene goal to increase the advantage to four. Beard scored on a free position shot with 5:23 to go before
Katie DeWitt recorded her first collegiate goal a minute later. The Warriors were able to score a woman-up goal with 2:24 left. The Dutchmen added a goal right at the end of the game as Whisler finished off her hat trick off an assist by Cohee.
Inside the Box
- Cohee had the best game of her career recording her first hat trick and dishing out a career-high seven assists for 10 points. The junior scored on all three shots she took. She recorded her 50th career assist on the final play of the game.
- Beard had six goals on 10 shots with two ground balls. The attacker has now scored at least six goals in a game seven times during her career.
- Wene had her second hat trick of the season with three goals and two assists for five points. The senior recorded her 100th career point in the game and now has 103 on 86 goals and 17 assists. Wene also won her 100th draw control, winning a team-high nine to give her 108 in her career.
- Whisler also finished with five points on three goals and two assists. The junior recorded the second hat trick of her career.
- Morgan added four points on three goals and one assist for her second career hat trick.
- DeWitt scored her first goal and Hebert had an assist to give the Dutchmen seven different point scorers in the game.
- Chloe Moser won eight draw controls while Hebert won four.
- Gigi Ditsky made eight saves in goal to earn her first win at LVC.
- LVC had advantage in shots, ground balls, and draw controls. They outshot the Warriors 35-27, while ground balls and draw controls were both 21-14 in favor of the Dutchmen.
