Women’s Basketball Uses Team Effort to Defeat Alma

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team had four scorers in double figures to earn the team's first win of the year with a 66-61 victory over Alma College on Saturday afternoon at the Tony DeCarlo Center on the campus of John Carroll University. The victory was the first for Head Coach Julia Duggan in her career.
 
Brielle Reidinger got the scoring going for the Dutchmen (1-1) with a pair of free throws. Alma (0-2) scored to tie the game before Kailey Eckhart hit Reidinger down low for a layup. The Scots answered at the other end of the court. Riley Hevelow hit a pair of free throws and Eckhart scored in the paint to give the Dutchmen an 8-6 lead. The teams continued to trade scores as the first quarter progressed, as Reidinger knocked down a pair of free throws and Abbie Reed scored on a driving layup. Riley Hatzfeld scored a pair of buckets before Alma took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer with 2:40 on the clock to make it 19-16. Reidinger blocked a layup at one end of the court and knocked down a jumper at the other end. The forward then stole the ball and found Hatzfeld for a fastbreak layup. Reidinger then gave the Dutchmen a 22-19 lead with a layup. The senior blocked her third shot of the game on the last play of the quarter.
 
Alma kept the Dutchmen off the board for the first three possessions of the second quarter and scored on a putback to cut the deficit to one. Eckhart scored on a layup while being fouled and hit the shot at the line. A quick three-point response at the other end kept the lead at one point. Reidinger hit one of two free throws before the Scots were able to tie the score with 5:40 on the clock. Hevelow answered with a quick jumper to give LVC back the lead. Neither team was able to score over the next three and a half minutes until Alma tied the game up on a layup. Adrianna Stricek grabbed an offensive rebound, scored on the putback, and then grabbed a rebound at the other end of the court. Hevelow knocked down a jumper with a minute remaining to make it 32-28. The Scot answered with a three and one of two free throws with 10 seconds left to send the game into halftime tied.
 
The Scots scored first to take the early lead in the second half. Eckhart answered right back with a jumper. Alma was able to score four of the next five points to go up 38-35. Reidinger drove to the basket and scored before Hevelow gave the Dutchmen the lead with a layup. Reed found Erika Badner open for a three-pointer to push the advantage to four. The Dutchmen continued their strong play in the quarter as Hatzfeld and Badner added buckets to increase the lead to 46-39. Alma scored with 1:29 left in the quarter to cut the lead the five. Hatzfeld made a pair of free throws, and Stricek scored in the paint to end the scoring for LVC in the quarter as they held a five-point advantage at 50-45 after three.
 
The Scots were able to get the lead down to three after a minute of play in the fourth quarter on a three. LVC countered with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes as Reidinger, Eckhart, and Hevelow all scored in the paint. Hatzfeld gave the Dutchmen their largest lead of the game at 59-48 with six minutes left on a jumper in the paint. Alma slowly chipped away at the lead with Reidinger scoring down low and Hatfeld hitting a big three with a minute left after the Scots cut the deficit to two. Alma used a trio of three-pointers to make it a one-possession game before Hatzfeld's three. After a bucket by the Scots, Hevelow clinched the victory with a driving layup with 20 seconds left.
 
Inside the Box
  • Reidinger was named to the All-Tournament Team of the Winking Lizard Tournament with a huge double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds. The senior blocked six shots and dished out three assists.
  • Hatzfeld added 15 points and two blocks in 28 minutes of work.
  • Hevelow scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Eckhart scored 10 points for the second consecutive game to begin the year. She also grabbed five rebounds.
  • Reed had seven rebounds and three points with two assists.
  • Badner scored five points while Stricek added four and five rebounds.
  • The Dutchmen shot 42.6 percent from the field while shooting over 50 percent in three of the four quarters.
  • LVC owned the third quarter for the second straight day, outscoring the Scots 18-13.
  • The Dutchmen had a 43-32 rebounding advantage and blocked nine shots.
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will head back to Annville and be off until Thursday, Nov. 13, when they make the short trip to Lancaster to face Franklin & Marshall College. Tip-off against the Diplomats is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
