Foster and Weidenhammer Fuel Second Half Rally in Heartbreaking Shootout Defeat at 10th-Ranked Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Lebanon Valley field hockey team left everything on the field and gave everything they had in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at 10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Semifinals. The host Ducks advanced to Saturday's Championship game after outscoring the Dutchmen 3-1 in a shootout.
 
LVC (11-8) battled Stevens (17-2) extremely tough for the second time this season and frustrated the Ducks all game. The fourth-seeded Dutchmen outshot the top-seeded Ducks during the 60 minutes of regulation and frustrated the hosts throughout the game. Claire Weidenhammer took the first shot of the game in the second minute, missing the cage wide. A couple of minutes later, the Dutchmen earned the first penalty corner of the game. Weidenhammer had her shot blocked. Jillian Tait had a shot blocked, and Gracie Johnson sent a shot wide as LVC put a lot of early pressure on the Ducks.
 
Stevens was awarded their first corner of the game early in the sixth minute. Ella Weidenhammer made a big save, and Danika Setlock kept the rebound shot out of the back of the cage with a defensive save. The Ducks were awarded two more corners over the next minute, with Weidenhammer making a pair of saves. The Ducks gathered the rebound off the second save and were able to score the first goal of the game in the seventh minute. The Dutchmen attacked the circle following the goal as Rebecca Lane and Tait had shots saved. The teams battled back and forth over the final eight minutes of the quarter, with neither team able to get a shot off.
 
The Ducks were able to increase their lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute as a shot snuck into the back of the cage. LVC battled back and earned a corner in the 22nd minute. Lilah Shaub blasted a shot that was saved, leading to a second corner. The Ducks were able to keep the Dutchmen from taking a shot on the second corner. Both teams put a shot wide in the final five minutes of the half as the hosts held onto a 2-0 lead at the break despite being outshot 9-7.
 
Stevens started the third with a penalty corner in the first minute. Weidenhammer made a big save, and then Setlock came up with another defensive save on the rebound attempt. The Dutchmen began to turn the momentum in their favor as Abby Rodenberger had a shot blocked in the 34th minute, and Joanna Ehrhart put a shot on goal that was kicked away. The Dutchmen cut into the lead in the 39th minute shortly after a penalty corner. The was a scrum in front of the cage as the teams battled for the ball. Weidenhammer gained possession of the ball and knocked it into the back of the cage for her 19th goal of the season. The teams battled over the final six minutes of the quarter, but neither team was able to get a shot off.
 
LVC came right down the field to begin the fourth and earned a quick penalty corner. They were able to score the equalizer as Lauren Foster knocked in a pass from Tait. Stevens used the next 10 minutes to control possession and put a flurry of shots towards the cage. Ella Weidenhammer came up big with three saves, including a couple of diving saves, and the defense blocked two shots to keep the game tied. LVC countered with a strong attack over the final five minutes of regulation. Ehrhart had a shot saved, leading to a corner. Claire Weidenhammer blasted a shot that was saved. The Dutchmen had one last chance in regulation as Rodenberger's shot attempt off a corner with 30 seconds left was saved, and then the ball was cleared away by the Ducks.
 
The action in the first overtime period began with Ella Weidenhammer making a great diving stop. LVC nearly scored in the 65th minute as Ehrhart and Weidenhammer had shots saved off a corner. The Ducks gained possession and dominated the next five minutes as Ella Weidenhammer made five big saves. The Dutchmen played a woman down for about half of the second overtime period due to a couple of cards, though the defense still held strong. They blocked four shots, and Weidenhammer came up with two more big saves to send the game to a shootout.
 
The Ducks made their first attempt in the shootout. Amelia Taube stepped up and scored on her attempt. After a pair of misses, Stevens made their next two attempts while the Dutchmen missed on their two attempts as the hosts took the shootout by a 3-1 score.
 
Inside the Box
  • Claire Weidenhammer tallied her 41st career goal and 94th point on six shots. The junior put three shots on goal. She scored in eight of the last 10 games to end the season.
  • Foster scored for the third consecutive game to finish the year with six goals. She took two shots and put one on the cage.
  • Tait recorded her first assist of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Setlock had the first two defensive saves of her career.
  • Ella Weidenhammer made a career-high 15 saves while facing a season-high 17 shots.
  • Ehrhart put all three of her shots on the cage.
  • The Dutchmen needed a shootout to decide a winner for the fourth time this season.
  • LVC finishes the year with an 11-8 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play.
