ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley senior
Mattea Penner shone on Senior Day inside the Sorrentino Gymnasium on Saturday to lead the volleyball squad to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Stevenson University.
The Dutchmen (12-13) defeated Stevenson (14-12) for the first time since 2009, snapping a 13-match streak against the Mustangs. LVC scored the first two points of the match on a service error and a block by
Jillian Jefferys. The Mustangs scored the next four points to take their first lead of the afternoon. LVC responded with a huge 15-5 run.
Lyla Arfanella started the run by recording three of the first six points scored by the Dutchmen. Jefferys put away a pair of sets by
Sofia Rios to give LVC an eight-point gap. The Mustangs countered with a rally to even the score at 18. They continued the run and led 23-21. Senior
Margaret Cole blocked an attack, and then Penner and Jefferys gave the Dutchmen a 25-24 lead. The teams traded points until Jefferys and
Brooke Olejniczak scored on back-to-back serves to win the first set 30-28.
LVC started strong in the second set, winning seven of the first 10 points. The lead stayed around four points over the next 10 serves until a Penner ace gave the Dutchmen a 14-8 lead. Stevenson won the next two points to get the deficit back to four. The teams traded points until LVC got to 20. The Mustangs scored five of six points to cut the advantage to 21-19. Penner and Jefferys recorded points to get LVC to 23 points before the Mustangs made it a one-point lead. Jefferys and Cole scored the final two points of the set to give LVC a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Stevenson won six of the first 10 points in the third set. LVC responded with a 6-2 run to take a two-point lead. The Mustangs countered with a 7-2 rally. Penner and Reynolds scored three consecutive points to cut the deficit to one at 18-17. The Dutchmen continued the run, and another three-point swing that ended with a Penner ace put LVC on top 21-20. The Mustangs responded by winning four of the next five points to send the match to a fourth set. The Mustangs came out swinging in the next set as they built a 6-1 advantage. The lead grew to seven before a 3-1 rally by the Dutchmen cut the advantage to five. Stevenson responded with the next five points. LVC was able to cut the deficit to six at 17-11, but that was as close as they would get in the set, with Stevenson winning the set 25-16 to send the match to a fifth set.
Penner had five of the first 10 points in the fifth set as the Dutchmen built an early 7-3 lead.
Kylie Nagle had an ace, and the Dutchmen recorded a block assist from Jefferys and
Teaguen Reynolds. The Mustangs called a timeout and responded with the next five points to take the lead at the change of sides. LVC called a timeout at the switch and answered with the next three points. Stevenson cut it to one before LVC scored the final five points of the match to take the win. Jefferys and Penner had the first two points. Olejniczak had back-to-back kills, and then
Sofia Okronley ended the match with an ace.

- Penner had an outstanding day with a career-high 27 kills, five aces, four total blocks, and 15 digs.
- Jefferys finished with 10 kills and six total blocks.
- Olejniczak recorded 13 kills on the day while Cole had five.
- Rios recorded a season-high 52 assists and finished with eight digs.
- Nagle had 18 digs and five assists.
- Reynolds recorded eight total blocks, five kills, and two digs.
- The team recorded a season-high 66 kills and 61 assists in the match. The 11 total blocks were the third-most this season.
- The Dutchmen finish the season with a 4-1 mark against MAC Commonwealth teams, including defeating the two teams atop the conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
- LVC snapped a 13-match losing streak against the Mustangs with the first win since a 3-2 victory on Oct. 3, 2009, to win the Franklin & Marshall Scramble.

LVC will close out the regular season on Wednesday evening against Misericordia University in what is most likely going to be a preview of the following week's MAC Freedom Semifinal matchup. The Cougars are undefeated in conference play this season and have wrapped up the top seed for the Championships. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Sorrentino Gymnasium on Wednesday.
