Three Dutchmen Score in Men’s Ice Hockey’s Overtime Battle at SUNY Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. ­­– John King, Cody Walker, and Owen Ames each found the net for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team, as the program dropped a hard-fought 4-3 game to SUNY Morrisville in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the SUNY Morrisville IcePlex. Walker led LVC with two points, dishing out an assist as well. 

The Dutchmen didn't waste any time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs 17 seconds into the game. The program opened the scoring when King sent the puck into the back of the net for his first career goal. Lebanon Valley remained aggressive offensively, putting six more shots on target that were saved during the next 3:27. During the stretch, Garrett Jackson tallied two shots. SUNY Morrisville then put shots on goal at the 4:17, 6:12, and 7:01 marks, which resulted in saves for LVC by goaltender Jadon Lee. The Dutchmen countered with a pair of offensive opportunities, as Walker put back-to-back shots on target that were saved in the ninth minute. 

Back on the defensive end, Jordan Stear blocked a shot by the Mustangs at the 8:53 mark before Lee came through with eight important saves over the next 2:21. SUNY Morrisville later went on a power play in the 13th minute, and Lee delivered saves at the 12:37, 13:11, and 13:22 marks during a successful penalty kill for Lebanon Valley. The goaltender continued to limit the opposition as the first period went on, logging additional stops at the 16:33 and 17:47 marks. The Dutchmen also went on a power play in the 19th minute, and Walker created a scoring chance by putting a shot on goal that was saved with 1:05 to go in the frame. 

Lebanon Valley tallied a shot early in the second period, as Reece McDonald had an attempt saved 49 seconds into the frame. The Mustangs then scored on a goal by Caden Sutter at the 1:09 mark, tying the contest at 1-1. SUNY Morrisville also put two shots on target within 23 seconds later in the second minute, and Lee made saves on each try. Offensively, the Flying Dutchmen kept sending the puck toward the net, as Dylan Miller registered a shot that was saved at the 2:09 mark before Walker and McDonald had consecutive tries saved in the fourth minute. The Mustangs later scored on a power-play goal by Mason Losel 6:03 into the second, taking a 2-1 advantage. 

The Dutchmen quickly answered back 7:27 into the second frame, tying the game at 2-2 on a power-play goal by Walker. Ames and Stear were credited with assists on the game-tying goal. SUNY Morrisville followed this with a pair of shots within eight seconds in the 10th minute, and Lee came through with two more stops for LVC. Lebanon Valley scored again at the 12:02 mark, claiming a 3-2 lead. The program went ahead when Ames netted a power-play goal, marking the first goal of his collegiate career. Walker dished out the assist on the go-ahead goal. The Flying Dutchmen remained aggressive offensively during the rest of the second period, putting six more shots on goal. Three of LVC's attempts during this stretch came during power plays, including a shot by Troy Andrews that was saved at the 15:53 mark, a try by Stear that was saved at the 18:55 mark, and a shot by Ames that was saved with 54 seconds left.

The Mustangs took the first shot of the third period just eight seconds into the frame, which resulted in Lee posting a save for the Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley also kept tallying shots as the game went on, putting 10 attempts on target within the first 7:51. During this stretch, Ames, Andrews, and Mason Proskin each had two shots saved. Lee also kept battling as the period progressed, recording more saves for LVC at the 8:10, 12:19, and 14:39 marks. 

The Mustangs then scored on a goal by Losel 15:33 into the third period, tying the contest at 3-3. The Flying Dutchmen countered with a shot on target each by Jackson and Proskin, which were saved within 29 seconds in the 18th minute. Back on the defensive end, Lee tallied another important stop for LVC at the 17:53 mark. Lebanon Valley proceeded to take two more shots during the remainder of regulation, as Ian Lindberg had a try saved at the 18:47 mark and John King had a shot saved with 52 seconds remaining. The programs were tied at the end of the third frame, sending the game into overtime. 

SUNY Morrisville scored 25 seconds into overtime on a goal by Losel, prompting 4-3 to be the final score.

Lebanon Valley will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., when the program will begin Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) competition against Neumann University at Ice Works Rink #3 in Aston, Pa.
