Men’s Basketball Earns Big Road Win at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Men's Basketball team had three scorers in double figures and held off a late rally from host Arcadia University to defeat the Knights 72-70 at Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in an important Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom game.

LVC (9-8, 3-3 MAC Freedom) won for the third consecutive Saturday to even its conference record while picking up the program's first victory over Arcadia (8-9, 3-3 MAC Freedom) since 2017. The Dutchmen got off to a great start for the second game in a row as Evin Timochenko scored on the first two possessions to make it 4-0. The Knights missed their first two shots but got on the scoreboard with a layup just over two minutes into the game. Braden Bohannon hit a three, but Arcadia responded right back with a three of their own. The Dutchmen grew the lead to six as Ryan Harder and Bohanon sandwiched a Knights bucket. Arcadia got the deficit back down to three on a three-pointer. Kyle Tang scored on a three-point play and then hit a driving layup to put the dutchmen up 18-10 with just under 12 to play in the half.

The Dutchmen held the Knights scoreless for a four-minute stretch but were unable to increase the lead any larger than 10 as Michael Main knocked down a jumper midway through the half. Arcadia scored on a layup with nine minutes on the clock and the next points came on a Bohannon bucket a little over a minute later. LVC's lead was at eight with right around four minutes to go in the half when Timochenko found Main open for a three-pointer. The Knights responded with a pair of layups over the next two minutes and then a three pointer with a little over a minute to go cut the score to 27-23. Bohannon scored on a layup in the final minute and the Knights responded at the other end to keep it a four-point game at the half.

Arcadia came out of the break and scored five points in the first minute to take a 30-29 lead. Jason Penn hit a jumper out of a timeout to give the Dutchmen back the lead. The Knights continued their run with the next four points to take their biggest lead of the game at 34-31 with 17 minutes left. Main scored in the paint and then Timochenko gave LVC the lead on a traditional three-point play. After another stop on defense, Harder knocked down a three to put the Dutchmen up by five. The Knights responded with five quick points to tie the game up. Harder knocked down another three off a feed by Bohannon and then after forcing a turnover, Penn scored on a driving layup. Phil Unangst grabbed a defensive rebound and then scored at the other end forcing the Knights to call a timeout with 13 minutes on the clock and LVC leading 46-39.

The Knights came out of the timeout and held the Dutchmen scoreless for a little over two minutes. However, LVC played great defense and held the Knights to just three made free throws during that stretch to keep a four-point advantage. Penn scored on a driving layup, Timochenko had another traditional three-point play, and then Penn hit another driving layup to give LVC an 11-point advantage with 8:30 to play. The Knights stooped the run with a three before Evan Smith scored on a layup and Penn knocked down a three giving LVC its largest lead at 58-45 with seven minutes to play.

Arcadia slowly trimmed the advantage down to eight over the next three minutes. Tang found a wide open Timochenko under the basket to push the lead back to 10. A three pointer by the Knights cut it down to seven. A traditional three-point play got Arcadia within four before Penn scored to make it 68-62. The Knights scored three points to make it a three-point game with a minute left. Timochenko was fouled and made two shots, Arcadia scored a layup, and then Penn hit his two free throws. The Knights responded with a bucket and steal. They made one of two free throw attempts to get within two at 72-70 with 19 seconds left. Arcadia got the ball back with 10 seconds left and a last second three was off the mark as the Dutchmen held on for the win.
