SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Volleyball team defeated Buffalo State University 3-1 and then dropped a 3-1 decision to Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon inside the O. W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove.
Game One vs. Buffalo State
The Dutchmen won the first two sets by scores of 25-20. The Bengals extended the match by winning the third set 25-17 before LVC came back and crushed the fourth set by a score of 25-7. Buffalo State scored the first two points of the match.
Teaguen Reynolds got the Dutchmen going with a block.
Mattea Penner tied the set up with a kill and then
Lyla Arfanella served up an ace to give LVC the lead. A Penner kill gave the Dutchmen a 7-4 lead in the set before BSU cut into the lead to make it 8-7. The Dutchmen responded with five consecutive points to go up by six. A pair of kills by
Taylor McInerney and a service ace from
Abigail Souder fueled another 5-0 run that gave the Dutchmen a big 18-10 advantage. Reynolds had a kill off an overpass to make it 22-13 before the Bengals put together a rally to cut the lead to 23-19.
Libby Lindau and
Margaret Cole had kills to close out the set.
Sofia Okronley got the Dutchmen out to a big 6-0 lead in the second set with an ace and two assists during the run. LVC increased the lead to 13-4 following block assists and kills from
Riley Mack and
Breanne Rotz. The Bengals rallied to bring the lead to 15-14. LVC countered with six straight points behind a pair of aces by Okronley and kills from Lindau, McInerney, and Reynolds. A kill by Lindau made it 24-17 but the Bengals scored the next three points to stay alive in the set. LVC scored the set-winning point on a BSU attack error to go up 2-0. Buffalo State got out to a big lead in the third set scoring 14 of the first 17 points. The Dutchmen slowly clawed the way back into the set and a pair of kills by Lindau made it 22-14.
Kathryn Sansom got the Dutchmen within seven at 24-17 but the Bengals scored the next point to extend the match to four sets.
LVC responded in a big way as once again they started the set with nine straight points. Okronley began the set with an ace and had three aces during the run. Lindau had a pair of kills to run the advantage up to 12-3. The lead was 14-5 when the Dutchmen put the set away with another 9-0 run behind four kills from McInerney. The Bengals traded points the rest of the way as Reynolds clinched the win with a kill.
Inside the Box
- McInerney led the team with 16 kills on 30 attacks. She also had two block assists.
- Lindau had a season-high 13 kills and an impressive .591 hitting percentage.
- Reynolds had nine kills on 10 attacks with five total blocks including two solo blocks.
- Jasmine Sullivan totaled 17 assists while Okronley had 16.
- Okronley finished with six aces while Mack added two.
- Abigail Souder led the team with 14 digs while Arfanella had 11.
- The Dutchmen had a hitting percentage of .291, the second-best of the season.
Game Two vs. Susquehanna
The Dutchmen took on the hosts River Hawks in the second match of the afternoon and dropped a hard-fought 3-1 battle. Susquehanna won the first set 25-22. LVC came back to tie the match up with a 25-23 win in set two. SU then won the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-17. Lindau scored the first point of the match, but Susquehanna scored four of the next five to take a 4-2 lead. The Dutchmen retook the lead 5-4 before the River Hawks scored three straight points. A kill by McInerney tied the set at seven and then the teams traded points until Susquehanna used a 4-0 run to go up 14-10. The River Hawks increased the lead to 19-13 before a 5-1 run by LVC brought it back to a two-point set at 20-18. Reynolds and Lindau had a block assist while McInerney had another kill to make it 23-22 before Susquehanna scored the final two points to win the set.
The second set was just as tight as the first with neither team able to gain more than a two-point advantage over the first 20 points of the set. The River Hawks scored four out of the next five points to take their biggest lead of the set at 14-11. The Dutchmen took advantage of four consecutive errors by the home team to take a 16-15 lead. Susquehanna responded with a 6-3 run to go up 21-19. Penner and Lindau sandwiched a bad set by SU to give the Dutchmen back the lead. It was tied at 23 when a service error put the Dutchmen at set point. McInerney finished the set with a kill off a set by Sullivan.
LVC used the momentum of winning the set to win the first three points of the third set. They were able to maintain the early lead until three straight points by the River Hawks tied the set at seven. It was still tied at 10 when Reynolds and back-to-back kills from Penner made it a three-point LVC lead. Susquehanna countered with five of the next seven points to tie it back up at 15. The host then used a big 9-1 run to go up 24-18 in route to winning the set 25-19.
The run continued into the fourth set as Susquehanna scored the first three points. LVC responded with the next four points and then the teams traded points until it was tied at seven. Penner gave the Dutchmen a 9-8 advantage before three consecutive points put the River Hawks back in the lead. McInerney had three kills during a 4-1 run that gave LVC the lead back at 13-12. Susquehanna won nine of the next 11 points to take a six-point lead. LVC won the next two points, but SU finished strong with the final four points to take the set and the match.

- McInerney had 17 kills and two total blocks.
- Okronley had 17 assists and 12 digs while Sullivan added 16 assists.
- Souder had 11 digs and three assists.

LVC will return to conference play on Tuesday with an important home match against FDU-Florham. First serve against the Devils is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Sorrentino Gymnasium.
