Reynolds and McInerney Power Volleyball to Split

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Teaguen Reynolds and Taylor McInerney combined for 60.5 total points to lead the Lebanon Valley Volleyball team to a split on Saturday in a tri-match against University of Rochester and Catholic University inside Sorrentino Gymnasium. The Dutchmen dropped a 3-1 decision to Rochester and then defeated Catholic 3-1.
  
Game One vs. Rochester
The Dutchmen had a great first set as they took down the Yellowjackets 25-15. Rochester responded with three consecutive set wins by close scores of 29-27, 25-23, and 25-20 wo win the match. A pair of McInerney kills put the Dutchmen up 6-1 in the opening set. The Yellowjackets scored the next three points before LVC used a 5-1 run to go up by six. Abigail Souder had back-to-back aces and then a McInerney kill gave LVC a 19-11 lead in the set. Rochester cut the lead down to five points before LVC finished strong with six of the final seven points in the set that ended on a Reynolds block.
 
Rochester had a strong start in the second set as they took a 5-3 advantage early. The teams traded points until three consecutive points for the Yellowjackets gave them a 10-6 advantage. The Dutchmen responded with a 5-1 run to tie things up at 11. The rally continued and a Reynolds kill put the Dutchmen up 16-13 forcing Rochester to call a timeout. The Yellowjackets came out of the timeout and scored the next seven points to retake the lead. LVC fought right back and a service ace from Lyla Arfanella tied the set at 20. The teams battled back-and-forth with Rochester scoring three straight points at the end of the set to tie the match up.
 
The Dutchmen got off to a slow start in the third set as Rochester took a 9-5 advantage. LVC battled back with a great run and back-to-back aces from Robyn Stepler tied the set up at 11. Sofia Okronley and Libby Lindau had back-to-back kills to make it 14-13 in favor of the Dutchmen. LVC got to 20 points first in the set and the teams traded points. A 4-1 run by the Yellowjackets gave them a two-point lead before Lindau and Reynolds tied the set up at 23 with kills. Two errors by the Dutchmen allowed Rochester to win the next two points and the set.
 
The Yellowjackets had another strong start to the fourth set with nine of the first 13 points. LVC responded with a 6-0 run with Mattea Penner serving to go up 10-9. McInerney had a pair of kills to make it 13-11 before a 5-1 run for Rochester gave them the lead. The advantage grew to 23-16 but LVC kept fighting and closed the gap to 24-20 before an attack error ended the match.
 
Inside the Box
  • McInerney had 16 kills and hit .316 with one block assist.
  • Reynolds had four solo blocks, two assisted blocks, and eight kills on 17 attacks.
  • Stepler had 35 assists and three aces with two block assists.
  • Lindau added eight kills, an ace, and a block assist.
  • Penner and Souder had a team-high 13 digs each.
  • Maragaret Cole had five kills and four total blocks.
Game Two vs. Catholic
The Dutchmen came out on fire against the Cardinals in the final match of the day taking the first set 25-5. Catholic won the second set 25-21 before LVC won the next two sets 25-17 and 29-27 to earn a split. Arfanella had a pair of aces on her first two serves and the Dutchmen scored the first five points and eight of the first 10 to force an early timeout call. Kills by Cole and an ace by Sofia Okronley grew the lead to 11-2. LVC kept the pressure on the Cardinals as Reynolds had four kills and McInerney had three kills over the final 12 points with the Dutchmen winning the last nine points of the set.
 
Catholic won the first point of the second set but LVC won the next five. The Cardinals used a run of their own to tie the set up at eight and then used a 5-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Dutchmen scored seven of the next 11 points to tie things up at 18. Catholic countered with a 6-2 run to get within set point at 24-20. McInerney kept the hopes alive of a comeback with a kill, but the Cardinals scored on the next rally to tie the match up.
 
The beginning of the third set belonged to the Cardinals as they jumped out to a 6-2 advantage. Penner used a great serve to score eight consecutive points for the Dutchmen including four aces. A pair of points for the Cardinals stopped the run but LVC kept attacking and were able to grow the advantage to 22-10 behind strong play and a few attack errors by Catholic. The visitors fought back and were able to cut the deficit down to 24-17 before Lindau ended the set with a kill.
 
Catholic scored three of the first four points in the fourth set. Reynolds used a big serve to record four service aces over the next nine points as the Dutchmen took an early 10-3 lead in the set. Catholic responded with a run of their own to bring the score to 11-9 in favor of the Dutchmen. LVC countered the run with another 6-0 run of their own to make it 17-9. The Cardinals slowly clawed their way back into the set and tied things up at 21. The teams traded points before back-to-back kills by Penner with Reynolds serving gave the Dutchmen a 29-27 set win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Reynolds hit an outstanding .889 with eight kills on nine attacks. The sophomore also had four aces and four digs.
  • McInerney had a season-high 19 kills and hit .452.
  • Lindau had double-digit kills with 10.
  • Stepler and Okronley shared the setting duties with Stepler recording 28 assists and Okronley finishing with 22.
  • Penner had a team-high five aces while Stepler added four.
  • The 57 kills, 55 assists, and 18 service aces were all season-highs for the Dutchmen.
  • Cole had a pair of solo blocks and six kills.
  • Riley Mack had a strong game off the bench with seven kills.
  • Arfanella led the team with 11 digs while Souder had 10.
Up Next
The Dutchmen enter conference play with a 7-4 record and will be on the road this Wednesday for the first MAC Freedom match of the season. LVC and DeSales University will get underway at 7 p.m. in Center Valley on opening night of conference action.
