Women’s Tennis Rallies to Defeat Scranton

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Women's Tennis team earned a big 4-3 victory over University of Scranton on Tuesday at the Shankroff Tennis Center by winning the final two singles matches in three sets.
 
The Dutchmen (1-2) won the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Scranton won at number two doubles after LVC won at number three doubles to even things up. Sarah McComas and Catherine Stone were down 5-4 at number one doubles before rallying for the win to clinch the first point of the match. The Royals won three of the first four singles matches with number one and number two singles headed into the third set. Scranton led in each set before McComas and Laken Kelly used strong finishes to win the sets and the matches.
 
Inside the Box
  • Nikki Denbowski and Abby DeLisio made quick work at number three doubles winning 6-2 to improve to 1-1 on the year.
  • Erika Badner and Katie Berra had a close match at number two doubles dropping a 6-4 decision.
  • McComas and Stone needed a tiebreaker to win at number one doubles but came through with a 7-6 (7-3) victory after being down.
  • Badner improved to 2-1 at number three singles with a strong 6-3, 6-3 victory.
  • Emily Bryant had a close match at number five singles but was on the tough end of a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 decision.
  • Kelly dropped the first set of her number six singles match 7-5 but then rallied to win the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3. The first-year was down 3-2 in the third set and won the next four games to win the set and the match.
  • McComas had the most impressive rally of the night at number one singles in a marathon match that took right around three hours. She won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). After dropping the second set 6-3, she was down 5-3 in the third set and faced multiple match points in winning four consecutive games to take the set 7-5 and win the match for the Dutchmen.

Four Dutchmen will compete at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships that begin Saturday at University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The final dual match of the spring is next Wednesday, September 25 at 4 p.m. against Penn State Harrisburg at the Shankroff Tennis Center.
