Stossel Becomes Dutchmen Baseball’s All-Time RBIs Leader at Arcadia

AMBLER, Pa. ­­– Shane Stossel recorded six RBIs to bring his career total to 133 and become the Lebanon Valley College baseball team's all-time leader, during its doubleheader against Arcadia University on Saturday, April 27 at Skip Wilson Field. The Dutchmen battled valiantly in both games, as the club dropped its last two matchups of the season by scores of 10-8 and 14-10. 

Game One
The Knights opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead after a frame that included a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the left-field line and an RBI single through the right side. Stossel picked up Lebanon Valley's first base hit in the top of the second, leading off the inning with a single down the left-field line. 

Tony Bennage then entered the game to pitch for LVC in the bottom of the second and began his outing with a scoreless frame, registering two groundouts to second base and a foul out to first base. Bennage followed this by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the third inning, recording a strikeout, a flyout to center field, and a groundout to third. Arcadia then added seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it a 10-0 game after a frame that included a two-run single up the middle and a two-run double to center field.

The Dutchmen got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, advancing the score to 10-1.  Ryan Murphy plated a run by sending an RBI double into left-center field, driving in Luke Pollock. Jacob Detwiler came in to pitch for LVC in the bottom of the fifth and posted a 1-2-3 inning, getting a groundout to second, a groundout to shortstop, and a flyout to right field. 

Lebanon Valley then scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, narrowing the score to 10-3. Nico Santoro led off the frame with a double to left field before Stossel brought him home with a one-out RBI single to center field. Later in the inning, Pollock hit an RBI double down the right-field line to knock in Stossel. Detwiler delivered another scoreless frame in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two batters.

The Flying Dutchmen followed this with a big five-run inning in the top of the seventh, making it a 10-8 game. The club loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Kenny Palmieri and Santoro before a walk by Logan Brewer. Stossel was then hit by a pitch to bring home Palmieri, and Santoro scored on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Jace Fetterman and Justin Ranker were also hit by pitches with the bases full to plate Brewer and Stossel. The scoring was capped off by Murphy walking with the bases loaded, bringing in Ethan O'Loughlin. This would stand as the final score. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Stossel tied for game-highs with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. 
  • Santoro tied a game-high two hits with a double while also matching a game-high two runs scored. 
  • Palmieri tied a game-high two hits while scoring a run. 
  • Pollock hit an RBI double and had a run scored. 
  • Murphy doubled, walked, and picked up two RBIs. 
  • Brewer drew a walk and crossed the plate once. 
  • Fetterman walked and recorded an RBI.
  • Ranker tallied an RBI. 
  • O'Loughlin scored a run. 
  • Detwiler tied a season-high two strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief. 
  • Bennage, Jacob Horton, and Michael Williams each struck out a batter.
Game Two
Palmieri led off the game by drawing a walk for Lebanon Valley before later stealing second base in the top of the first inning. Arcadia got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 3-0 advantage on an RBI single to center field, an RBI single through the left side, and an RBI fielder's choice on a ball hit to second. The Knights then added two runs in the bottom of the second, going ahead 5-0 on two RBI singles to center field. 

The Dutchmen responded with two runs in the top of the third inning, narrowing the score to 5-2. Murphy walked and later moved up to second base on a groundout, before scoring on Santoro's two-out RBI double down the left-field line. Brewer followed this by sending an RBI single to left-center field, driving in Santoro. Trey Dianna entered the game to pitch for LVC in the bottom of the third inning and tossed a scoreless frame, recording the third out with a strikeout. The Knights then scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 7-2 contest after an inning that included an RBI single up the middle. 

Lebanon Valley answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, trimming the score to 7-6. The club loaded the bases with no outs after Palmieri hit a double to left-center field, Santoro was hit by a pitch, and Brewer singled down the left-field line. This was followed by Stossel crushing a grand slam over the left-center field wall, plating Palmieri, Santoro, and Brewer. This blast brought Stossel to 133 career RBIs, making him the program's all-time leader. Arcadia countered with a two-run home run to left-center in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 9-6 lead. 

The Knights then tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth, advancing the score to 13-6 after an inning that included an RBI groundout to third base and a two-run double to left-center field. The Flying Dutchmen put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning, making it a 13-8 contest. Ranker lined a two-run double down the left-field line, driving in Stossel and Pollock. Arcadia followed this by tacking on a run with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the seventh, going up 14-8. 

Lebanon Valley continued to battle until the final out, scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning to advance the score to 14-10. O'Loughlin led off the frame with a double to left-center field before Fetterman brought him home with an RBI double to right-center field. Later in the inning, LVC hit into a double play that allowed Fetterman to score his 100thcareer run. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Stossel hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth for his ninth homer of the year, bringing his career RBIs total to 133 and passing John Mentzer on Lebanon Valley's all-time list. The senior's four RBIs tied a season-high and matched the game-high. Stossel also walked twice and tied a team-high two runs scored. 
  • Fetterman doubled, drove in a run, and scored his 100th career run. 
  • Ranker hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • Brewer tied for a team-high three hits while hitting a double, tying his season-high in hits. The junior also tallied an RBI and a run scored. 
  • Pollock tied a team-high and set a career career-high with three hits while scoring a run.
  • Santoro recorded two hits with a double and an RBI. The graduate student also tied a team-high two runs scored. 
  • Palmieri doubled, drew a walk, stole a base, and crossed the plate once. 
  • Murphy tallied a walk, a hit, and a run scored. 
  • O'Loughlin hit a double and scored a run. 
  • Malachi Duka registered a strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief. 
  • Blair Shaffer and Trey Dianna also struck out a batter each. 
The Dutchmen concluded the 2024 season with their doubleheader against the Knights.
