MADISON, N.J. – Alyssa Wene scored six goals including the game-winner in overtime to lead the Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 comeback victory at FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon on Field in Madison.
The Dutchmen (11-5, 6-0 MAC Freedom) used a big fourth quarter to force overtime with the Devils (5-8, 2-4 MAC Freedom) before Wene ended things in the extra session. FDU-Florham got off to a fast start after an early card to the Dutchmen.
Jamie Handwerger made a pair of saves on free position shots to keep the Devils off the scoreboard. FDU scored twice in a span of 15 seconds to take a 2-0 lead with 8:28 to go in the first quarter. Wene cut the lead in half with a free position goal.
The Devils responded with another pair of goals 12 seconds apart to take a 4-1 lead with a little over four minutes to play. Wene scored a minute later to bring the lead to two. The Devils countered with a free position goal before
Anna Lougee scored in the final minute of the quarter to make it 5-3. Wene had a chance to complete her hat trick at the end of the quarter, but her attempt was saved.
The Devils took their biggest lead of the game in the first half of the second quarter with three goals to take an 8-3 lead. The Dutchmen called a timeout to talk things over and allowed just three total shots over the final eight minutes of the half. On the offensive end, Lougee started the comeback with her second goal of the game with just over five minutes left on the clock.
Emily Beard scored with 1:30 left off an assist by
Bethany Cohee to cut the lead to 8-5 heading into the halftime break.
The Devils scored twice in the first 5:15 of the second half to retake a five-goal lead. Wene knocked the ball out on a failed clear attempt by the Devils, picked up the ground ball and scored to complete her hat trick with six minutes to go in the quarter. Three minutes later she scored again on another free position shot to cut the lead to 10-7. She nearly added another goal a minute later, but her shot was saved and FDU-Florham held the three-goal advantage into the fourth quarter.
FDU-Florham got a big save from their goalkeeper to begin the quarter as Wene's free position shot was kept out of the net. The Devils then cleared the ball quickly and scored to make it 11-7. Beard won the following draw control and
Molly Whisler powered her way past a defender for a shot into the back of the net. Wene won the draw and less than a minute later Beard cut the lead to two with her second goal of the game. The senior won the next draw and got the ball back into her stick after the Dutchmen passed it around the outside. Beard beat her defender and completed her hat trick to bring LVC within one forcing the Devils to call a timeout. After Wene won the draw control out of the timeout,
Erin Zieber was fouled inside eight meters and converted the free position attempt to tie things up at 11 with just under 10 minutes to play.
The teams battled up and down the field for a few minutes before Wene scored on a free position shot to give LVC their first lead of the game at 12-11 with 4:48 on the clock. The Devils were able to tie things up in the final minute and had a chance to win the game on the final possession of regulation. The Dutchmen defense held and forced a last second shot to go wide. In overtime, the Dutchmen forced a shot clock violation on FDU-Florham's first possession. The Dutchmen brought the ball down the field and Beard nearly ended things, but her free position shot hit the post. She picked up the loose ball and LVC got the ball into the stick of Wene who beat her defender and completed the comeback with her second overtime game-winner of the year.

- Beard recorded her sixth consecutive hat trick in conference play with three goals on nine shots. The senior won four draw controls and had two ground balls.

- Zieber won a team-high seven draw controls to give her 105 on the season. She also scored a goal and caused two turnovers.
- Handwerger finished with nine saves and held the Devils to 2-6 on free position shots.
- Whisler scored a goal and Cohee finished with an assist.
- LVC had a 31-29 shot advantage and a 17-13 advantage in draw controls.
- The Dutchmen defeated the Devils for the first time since 2016 stopping a three-game streak by FDU-Florham in the all-time series.

Lebanon Valley will close out the regular season with a big home matchup against 15th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. The Dutchmen and Ducks will battle for the MAC Freedom regular season title and the top seed in next week's conference tournament. The game will also be the team's Headstrong Dedication game. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Arnold Field.
