Brewer Homers Four Times in Baseball’s Doubleheader Sweep of King’s

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Logan Brewer hit four home runs for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, as the program swept King's College in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 at McGill Field. The Dutchmen won the first game 16-3 and took the second contest by a score of 13-10. 

Game One
The Monarchs (9-15, 4-9 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single up the middle. The Flying Dutchmen (12-13, 6-7 MAC Freedom) responded in the bottom half of the first, tying the game at 1-1. Ethan O'Loughlin came up to the plate facing two outs with runners on second and third, before hitting an RBI single up the middle to bring home Ryan Petrucci

Starting pitcher Andrew Spaan followed this with a shutout top of the second, retiring the side in order with three groundouts. King's then put another run on the board in the top of the third inning, going ahead 2-1 on an RBI single to right field. 

The Dutchmen answered back in the bottom of the third with a big five-run frame, claiming a 6-2 advantage. Shane Stossel put the club up by a run by driving a two-run home run down the right-field line, scoring Nico Santoro. Brewer followed this with a solo homer down the right-field line, going back-to-back. Later in the inning, Jace Fetterman launched a two-run blast to right-center field to plate O'Loughlin. 

Lebanon Valley's offense kept rolling in the bottom of the fifth inning, posting seven runs to extend its lead to 13-2. Santoro began the rally by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, forcing home Ryan Murphy. Stossel was then hit by a pitch with the bases full to score Owen Berry. This was followed by Brewer hitting a grounder back to the mound and reaching on a fielder's choice, while Logan Fuga crossed the plate after a fielding error by the pitcher. O'Loughlin then hit an RBI single back to the pitcher, scoring Santoro. Fetterman continued the big frame by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, knocking in Stossel. Pete Botbyl capped off the fifth with a two-run single up the middle, plating Brewer and O'Loughlin.

The Monarchs added a run in the top of the sixth inning, making it a 13-3 ballgame on an RBI triple to center field. The Dutchmen tacked on some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, advancing the score to 16-3. The club loaded the bases after Devin Kreger, Parker Tarnoci, and Justin Ranker each drew walks. Luke Pollock then drove a three-run double into right-center field, clearing the bases. Tony Bennage came in to pitch for LVC in the top of the seventh inning, closing out the victory with a shutout frame that included a strikeout. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Stossel hit his eighth home run of the season while registering three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Brewer left the yard in the third inning and tallied two runs scored with a walk.
  • Fetterman also homered in the third while picking up three RBIs.
  • O'Loughlin registered a season-high three hits while tying a season-most two RBIs and scoring twice. The second baseman also had season-highs with four assists and two putouts. 
  • Pollock hit a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth, marking his career-high in RBIs. 
  • Santoro hit a double while walking twice, scoring twice, and driving in a run. The shortstop also had a season-high five assists and three putouts in the field. 
  • Botbyl picked up a hit, a season-high two RBIs, and his first assist on the year. 
  • Murphy had a career-high two doubles while scoring a run and stealing a base. 
  • Berry also swiped a bag. 
  • Tarnoci recorded his first career walk and first career run scored. 
  • Patrick McNeill picked up his first career hit. 
  • Petrucci, Fuga, Kreger, Ranker, and Berry each crossed the plate as well.
  • Spaan recorded his second victory of the season, striking out four batters in a six-inning start on the mound. 
  • Bennage tallied a strikeout during a scoreless seventh, marking the 50th of his career. 
Game Two
King's (9-16, 4-10 MAC Freedom) also struck first in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double to right-center field in the top of the first inning. Lebanon Valley (13-13, 7-7 MAC Freedom) promptly responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, going ahead 3-1. Brewer kept his big afternoon going by crushing a two-run home run over the right-field wall, scoring Santoro. Berry later came to the plate with a runner on second and hit an RBI single through the left side, plating Pollock. 

Starting pitcher Nathan Clarke followed this by posting a zero in the top of the second, registering three strikeouts. The Dutchmen put another tally on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, claiming a 4-1 advantage. Stossel drove an RBI triple off the wall in right-center field, scoring Lincoln Hower. The Monarchs countered with two runs in the top of the third, narrowing their deficit to 4-3 with an RBI double to right-center field and an RBI single up the middle.

Lebanon Valley got a run back in the bottom of the third, extending its advantage to 5-3. Pollock led off the inning with a single to left field and later stole second with two outs. Ranker then hit an RBI double to center field, driving in Pollock. LVC made it a 6-3 contest in the bottom of the fourth, as Brewer hit a ball to first base and reached on a fielding error that allowed Botbyl to score. 

King's answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game at 6-6 after a frame that included a solo home run to left field. The Monarchs then put up four runs in the top of the sixth, taking a 10-6 lead after a three-run double to right-center and an RBI double to right field. 

The Dutchmen responded right away with a big six-run bottom of the sixth, claiming a 12-10 advantage. Stossel came to the plate with runners on first and second and lined an RBI single to right-center field, plating Botbyl. Brewer followed this by launching a clutch three-run homer over the right-field wall to score Santoro and Stossel, tying the game at 10-10. Berry then created another opportunity for the club by hitting a double and stealing third with one out. This led to Fetterman crushing a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run blast to right field, driving in Berry.

Malachi Duka then tossed a scoreless seventh inning for LVC, retiring the side in order. Lebanon Valley added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, extending their lead to 13-10. Brewer hit a solo home run to right, leaving the yard for the third time in the contest. Reliever Hunter Williams began his second inning of work in the top of the ninth and closed out the win by striking out two batters in a shutout frame. 

Inside the Box Score
  • The Dutchmen had a season-high four home runs and tied a season-high seven stolen bases. 
  • Brewer's three home runs tied LVC's single-game record, matching Michael Leri's three-homer performance against Kenyon College on March 4, 2020. The junior recorded a career-high six RBIs as well, marking the most by a Lebanon Valley player this year. Brewer also tied a career-high three runs scored, stole his first career base, and had a season-high three hits. The first baseman now has five long balls this campaign.
  • Fetterman hit his third homer of the year and registered a pair of RBIs. 
  • Stossel picked up two hits, including his first career triple. The senior also logged two RBIs and a run scored. 
  • Berry tied the program record with three stolen bases in a single game. The sophomore also recorded two hits with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Santoro tallied two hits, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. 
  • Pollock tied season-highs with a pair of hits and two runs scored. The sophomore also registered a stolen base. 
  • Botbyl had a base hit, two walks, and two runs scored. 
  • Ranker tallied a career-high six assists at second base, marking the most by an LVC player this spring. The junior also hit a double and knocked in a run. 
  • Hower picked up a hit, crossed the plate once, and had his first career assist. 
  • Clarke struck out a season-high seven batters in his start on the mound. 
  • Duka improved his record to 3-0 by fanning two batters in 1.1 scoreless frames. 
  • Williams recorded his first career save, tallying three strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief.

Lebanon Valley will return to the diamond at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, as the program will travel to take on King's for the final matchup of the three-game series at Lipo Field in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
