CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –
Jordan Walter pitcher a shutout in game one as the Lebanon Valley softball team swept host DeSales University on Tuesday afternoon at McGettigan Park in Center Valley. LVC won the opener 1-0 and then scored in all but two innings to win the nightcap 5-2.
Game One
Walter pitched excellent in the circle as she held the Bulldogs to three hits and a walk. The Dutchmen recorded the first hit of the game as Katie Mulller doubled to left center with one out in the second. She was stranded there as the Bulldogs got the final two outs of the inning. DeSales put two runners on base in the bottom of the inning on a walk and single, but
Danni Holmes threw the first runner out trying to steal and then Walter got a strikeout and grounder to shortstop to end the threat.
Megan Heard got on base via an error to lead off the third inning. She stole second and then advanced to third on a caught foul ball down the right field line.
Lexi Smith put runners on the corners with a single to third and then stole second. The Bulldog catcher threw the ball away on the steal allowing Heard to score.
LVC had an opportunity to increase the lead in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out. Heard reached by a hit-by-pitch. After she stole second, Holmes reached on a fielder's choice.
Sam Burns singled back to the pitcher to load the bases. DSU got out of the jam with a short flyball to left and a line out to second. The Bulldogs led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Walter did not let the ball leave the infield the next three batters to keep the Bulldogs scoreless. DeSales had one final opportunity to tie the game in the seventh after a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt. Walter closed the door with a foul out to third and strikeout.
Inside the Box
- Walter didn't allow a single Bulldog to get past second base while scattering three hits in her third shutout of the year. The senior struck out two.
- The Dutchmen stole six bases. Heard led the way with four while Smith and Holmes had one each.
- Heard was busy in the field making three putouts and five assists.
- Smith had a hit and four putouts at second base.
- Muller had a double and made two putouts in right field.
Game Two
LVC jumped out to. 5-0 lead with a run in each inning from the second to the sixth. After
Erin Sinatra got out of a jam in the first inning with a pop up back to herself, Muller recorded her second extra-base hit of the day with a one-out triple to right center.
Lindsey McCurdy knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to right for the first run of the game. Burns hit a two-out double in the third and scored on a Smith single through the left side to make it 2-0.
The Dutchmen manufactured their run in the fourth as Muller walked and then was pinch ran for by
Erin Pattillo. Pattillo stole second and then advanced to third on a McCurdy single to center. Pattillo then scored as the DSU catcher threw the ball away as McCurdy stole second. LVC scored their fourth run of the game in the fifth with a two-out rally. Smith hit an infield single to second and then stole second.
Nikki Sellers drove her in with a pinch hit double to left.
Maddy Gronback made it 5-0 in the sixth as she knocked in Heard with a two-out single to right center after Heard doubled down the line in left.
The Bulldogs cut into the lead with their only two runs of the day in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff double and two-run home run to left field. Sinatra responded by not allowing a hit the rest of the way to earn the win. DSU worked a walk to begin the seventh but a fielder's choice to third and a double play to Smith at second ended the game.
Inside the Box
- Smith led LVC with two hits, a run scored, a run batted in, and five putouts with an assist in the field.
- Muller hit a triple and walked in two plate appearances.
- Sellers knocked in a run with a pinch-hit double.
- Heard had another busy game at shortstop with three putouts and two assists. She had a double and scored a run offensively for the Dutchmen.
- Sinatra struck out four in the complete game victory.
- The Dutchmen stole four bases and had four extra-base hits in the game.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be back on the road for another conference doubleheader on Friday. LVC will cross state lines into New Jersey for a 2 p.m. start at FDU-Florham in Madison.
