MADISON, N.J. – Lindsey McCurdy had five hits on the afternoon to lead the Lebanon Valley softball team to a conference sweep of FDU-Florham on Friday afternoon at McManus Field in Madison, New Jersey. The Dutchmen won the opener 7-2 and then shutout the Devils 7-0 in game two.
Game One
The Dutchmen got on the board in the first inning with a run on two hits and an error.
Lexi Smith got on base as a throw from third went wide. She stole third and then scored as
Julia Craig grounded out to the second baseman.
Nicole Kratz kept the inning going with a single to right center before
Katie Muller drew a walk. McCurdy singled through the left side, but Muller was thrown out at second after rounding the base.
Megan Heard led off the second inning with a single through the left side. She then scored as
Nikki Sellers hit an infield single to shortstop and the Devils threw the ball away.
Maddy Gronback doubled to center and then
Sam Burns hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate the second run of the inning. Smith walked and stole second before Craig knocked in her second run of the day on another ground ball to the right side.
The Devils got on the board with two runs in the third. After a leadoff walk, FDU-Florham put runners on the corners with one out on an error and field's choice. A sacrifice fly drove in one run and then a single and double drove in the second run. The score remained the same until the fifth when LVC added an insurance run. Kratz walked to lead off the inning and then was pinch ran for by
Catherine Stone. Stone stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Muller single back to the pitcher.
LVC put the game away with a pair of runs in the seventh. Kratz started the inning by drawing another walk. Muller reached on a dropped fly ball in center to put runners on the corners. McCurdy drove in a run with a single through the right side and two batters later scored on a wild pitch.
Inside the Box
- Erin Sinatra pitched great once again with a complete game five-hitter to improve to 8-1. She struck out six to reach 280 for her career and move into sixth in program history.
- McCurdy had three hits in four at-bats with a run scored and a run batted in.
- Craig knocked in two runs while Heard and Sellers had two hits with a run scored each.
- Smith walked twice and stole three bases.
- LVC stole six bases on eight attempts.
- The Dutchmen had 11 hits and six walks.
Game Two
Burns led off the second game with a walk and steal of second. Smith singled through the left side to put runners at the corners. Smith then stole second, but the Devils were able to get out of the inning with no runs allowed. In the bottom of the inning, the Devils put the first two batter on base.
Jordan Walter got a strikeout, a grounder to third, and a ground out to short to get out of the jam.
Heard scored the first run of the game in the second as she tripled to right center and then scored on a throwing error. Sellers hit an infield single to short with two outs. Burns put runners on the corners with a single through the right side and then Smith knocked in a run with a single back up the middle. The Dutchmen added to the lead with three runs in the third. Muller and McCurdy hit back-to-back doubles and then Heard singled through the left side. Heard stole second and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a Sellers single to first base.
The scored remained the same until the fifth when LVC plated the final two runs of the afternoon.
Danni Holmes hit a two-out double to left to begin the rally. Burns knocked her in with a single to right. After a steal of second,
Emily Mitchell knocked in Burns with a single up the middle. The Devils singled and doubled to start the bottom half of the inning. Walter closed out the game by recording nine consecutive outs including a strikeout, fly ball to right, and a grounder back to her to get out of the jam in the fifth.
Inside the Box
- Walter scattered six hits and struck out five in her fourth shutout of the season.
- Burns reached base in all four plate appearances with three hits and a walk. She drove in a run and scored.
- McCurdy had two hits including a double with a run scored and a run batted in.
- Heard was 2-2 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI. She hit a triple and a single.
- Smith had two hits and knocked in a run.
- Muller recorded a multi-hit game and scored a run.
- Sellers was the sixth Dutchman with a multi-hit game with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
- LVC stole a season-high seven bases as Burns stole three and Smith stole two. Heard and Sellers had a stolen base each.
- The Dutchmen had a season-high 16 hits including three doubles.
Up Next
Lebanon Valley will be back in action next Thursday with a home doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall College at the LVC Softball Park. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m. against the Diplomats.
