ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sam Burns had four of Lebanon Valley's 19 hits as the Dutchmen softball team dropped a pair of close games to 16th-ranked Moravian University on Tuesday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park in Annville. The Greyhound rallied to win the opener 4-2 and then scored three runs in the first to defeat the Dutchmen 6-2 in game two.
Despite the two defeats for LVC (10-4), the games with Moravian (8-3) lived up to the hype of two top-20 teams playing each other. The Dutchmen were ranked 20th in this morning's NFCA Poll while the Greyhounds were ranked 16th.
Game One
Erin Sinatra and Madi Cunningham were locked in a pitcher's duel until the fifth inning of the opener. Sinatra struck out two in the top of the first before the Dutchmen loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning.
Lexi Smith and
Nicole Kratz had singles before
Katie Muller walked. Cunningham got out of the inning with a groundout to third.
Maddy Gronback and
Julia Craig hit doubles in the second and third innings but were stranded on the bases.
Moravian got on the board first in the fifth with a leadoff double by Cunningham and then another double to plate the first run. LVC struck right back in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back doubles by Gronback and Burns to tie the game up. Smith sacrificed Burns to third and the Craig drove in the go-ahead run with a grounder to the right side that went off the chest of the second baseman. The Greyhounds scored three runs in the top of the seventh on one hit, two walks, and two errors. The first two batters walked before a run scored on LVC's first error of the inning. A double knocked in the go-ahead run while the trailing runner was thrown out. The third run of the inning came across the plate on the second error of the inning.
Smith led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single to third. Muller worked a two out walk to put runners on first and second before Cunningham was able to get the final out on a hard line drive that was snagged by the third baseman.
Inside the Box
- Smith had two hits in the game for her second multi-hit game of the year.
- Gronback hit two doubles and scored a run.
- Burns was one of four Dutchmen with one hit and the outfielder knocked in a run and scored a run.
- Craig knocked in a run and had a hit.
- The Dutchmen outhit the Greyhounds 8-4 and had five doubles.
- Sinatra struck out six and gave up just three earned runs on four hits and three walks.
Game Two
The Greyhounds struck early as they scored three runs in the first inning. Moravian had four singles in the inning and took advantage of a fielding error to go up 3-0. Burns led off the bottom of the inning with a triple to right center field. Craig knocked her in two batters later with a single to right but that was all the Dutchmen were able to score in the first. Moravian loaded the bases with no outs in the second before
Jordan Walter got out of the inning with just one run scoring on a pair of ground balls and a strikeout.
The Dutchmen had a great opportunity to cut into the lead in the third as Burns led off the inning by beating out a grounder to the shortstop. She stole second and then Smith moved her over with an infield single to the second baseman. The Greyhounds were able to get out of the jam by catching Smith trying to steal second and then an unlucky line drive right at the shortstop for an inning-ending double play.
Nicole Kratz led off the fourth with a double to right. She was moved over to third and then Gronback hit her home with a single up the middle to cut the lead in half.
Mackenzie Willey singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with one out before a pair of ground balls got the Greyhounds out of the inning with no more damage. Three singles in the top of the fifth scored two more runs for Moravian as they took a 6-2 lead. Burns had her third hit of the game with a leadoff double to left center to start the bottom of the inning. She was not able to score as the Greyhounds got out of the jam with two grounders and a fly ball to right. The Dutchmen had a chance for a two-out rally in the sixth after a Muller pinch hit single to right, but
Danni Holmes hit a ball through the right side that hit
Megan Heard to end the inning.
Inside the Box
- Burns had her second three-hit game of the season and was a home run away from the cycle. She also scored a run and stole a base.
- Eight different Dutchmen had one hit as LVC once again outhit the Greyhounds 11-10.
- Craig and Gronback singled and knocked in a run each. Kratz had a double and scored a run.
- Walter struck out three and allowed five earned runs with just one walk.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will look to rebound on Saturday as they return to conference play with a doubleheader at DeSales University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at McGettigan Park in Center Valley.
