Gutierrez Nets Goal for Dutchmen Men’s Hockey in Battle Against Arcadia

HERSHEY, Pa. ­­– Dylan Gutierrez scored a goal for the Lebanon Valley College Men's Ice Hockey team, as the program dropped a 4-1 game to Arcadia University on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Hersheypark Arena. 

The Knights opened the scoring 34 seconds into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jude Cole. The Dutchmen countered with a shot on goal by Troy Andrews, which was saved at the 1:06 mark. Arcadia then put more shots on goal early in the frame, but goaltender Jadon Lee posted saves for LVC at the 1:33, 1:52, 2:41, and 2:50 marks. This was followed by Harlads Jirgens blocking a shot 2:59 into the first. Harris Blackwood also blocked a shot at the 4:27 mark, before Jirgens blocked another 5:06 into the frame. 

Lebanon Valley got on the board 7:14 into the opening period, tying the game at 1-1. The program evened the score on the goal by Gutierrez, courtesy of assists by Cameron Croteau and Andrews. The Knights then sent the puck toward the net at the 9:49 mark, but Lee was there to make the save for LVC. Cade Freer also blocked a shot 10:05 into the first, and Lee tallied more stops at the 11:02 and 11:08 marks. The Flying Dutchmen kept working to generate offensive opportunities as well, as Reece McDonald took a shot that was saved 12:41 into the frame before Jirgens put a pair of attempts on goal that were saved within eight seconds in the 14th minute. 

Lebanon Valley remained aggressive offensively as the first period went on, as Cade Helmer took a shot that was saved at the 14:03 mark, Brenden Yingling had an attempt saved at the 14:31 mark, and Blake Dustin's try was saved 15:45 into the frame. Defensively, Croteau blocked a shot by the Knights 16:10 into the first before Lee made a save five seconds later. Tanner Tolliver then logged a shot on goal that was saved at the 17:17 mark. Arcadia scored again before the end of the first period, taking a 2-1 lead with 30 seconds left on a power-play goal by Cody Mastay. Lebanon Valley also tallied two more shots before the end of the frame, as Blackwood registered attempts that were saved at the 19:49 and 19:58 marks. 

Lee faced another shot by the Knights just 27 seconds into the second period and came through with the save. The Dutchmen also sent the puck toward the net early in the second, as Dustin took a shot that was saved 1:17 into the frame before Ethan Hoover's try was saved at the 3:22 mark, and McDonald's shot was saved at the 4:08 mark. Lee then continued to produce as the second rolled on, making stops at the 4:58, 5:08, and 5:14 marks. Aidan Bright followed this by blocking a shot 6:34 into the period. Offensively, Blackwood registered a shot that was saved at the 7:47 mark and Jirgens had a try that was saved at the 8:47 mark. 

Later, during the 12th minute, Lee saved back-to-back shots by Arcadia within three seconds. Darion Benchich then took a shot for Lebanon Valley that was saved 12:07 into the second. Blackwood and Dylan Miller also contributed to the program's defensive efforts as the frame went on, blocking a shot each within 46 seconds in the 15th minute. In the 17th minute, Lee kept delivering a strong effort by making a pair of stops within four seconds. The Dutchmen also continued to create scoring chances as the end of the second approached, putting six more shots on goal. LVC's last attempt of the period was taken by McDonald and was saved at the 19:29 mark. 

The Knights sent a couple of shots toward the net early in the third period, and Lee responded with a save 23 seconds into the frame before making another stop at the 1:01 mark. Lebanon Valley generated some opportunities as well, as Helmer took a shot that was saved 1:53 into frame, before Bright had a try saved at the 3:35 mark and Andrews had a shot saved at the 3:46 mark. Jordan Stear then registered a pair of shots that were saved at the 4:40 and 5:02 marks. Defensively, Lee later made a save at the 9:50 mark while Croteau had a block six seconds later. Jirgens also blocked a shot at 10:21 into the third, and McDonald came through with a block at the 14:04 mark. 

The Dutchmen continued to battle offensively as the end of the third neared, as Max Kontir put a shot on goal that was saved at the 17:03 mark. Freer followed this with a shot on goal that was saved 18:27 into the period. The Knights then closed out the game with two late insurance goals, as Cole scored an empty-net goal at the 18:56 mark and Donnie Feldman recorded an empty-net goal with 29 seconds remaining. This prompted Arcadia to go ahead 4-1, which would stand as the final score.

Lebanon Valley has wrapped up its schedule for the first semester. The Dutchmen will return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, when the program will take on Alvernia University at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Center in Oswego, New York, in the Oswego Holiday Tournament.
