Dutchmen Field Hockey Season Ends in Overtime Heartbreaker

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Field Hockey team had a heartbreaking end to the season as top-seeded Arcadia University scored three minutes into overtime to defeat the Dutchmen 2-1 on Wednesday evening in the MAC Freedom Semifinals at Jean Lenox West Field in Glenside.

The fourth-seeded Dutchmen (15-4) battled all game after the Knights (13-7) took an early lead scoring 1:18 into the game on the first penalty corner. The Dutchmen dominated possession the rest of the first quarter but were unable to score. Jenna Angstadt had a shot blocked in the fifth minute leading to a penalty corner. She was able to get her shot pass the goalie off the corner but Arcadia's goal scorer, Morgan Mcentire, was able to keep the ball out of the cage with a defensive save. The Dutchmen earned another corner, and this time Gracie Johnson had her shot blocked, and Rebecca Lane's rebound attempt was hit over the goal by the keeper. LVC had another great opportunity to score in the final minute as they earned three corners. Angstadt had a shot kicked away for a save and Jillian Tait's shot after time expired went wide left.

A green card early in the second quarter put the Dutchmen a woman down but that didn't stop them from attacking the defense. Once they got back to full strength, Claire Weidenhammer had a shot blocked off a corner leading to another corner. Weidenhammer took another shot off the second corner which was saved away by the keeper. Arcadia nearly scored an insurance goal in the 25th minute as a forward got behind the defense but Ella Weidenhammer came out to make a fantastic diving save. The Dutchmen had a last-minute attack stopped as Angstadt had a shot blocked, and Johnson had a shot saved and a shot blocked on a pair of penalty corners.

The Knights took the first shot of the third quarter as Weidehammer knocked a high shot over the cage. Sorrell Long and Reese Arnold had back-to-back shots saved in the 40th minute as LVC pressed for the equalized. Angstadt had her attempt off a Johnson corner in the 43rd minute saved away and then a Lexi Ward shot sailed wide a minute later. The Dutchmen held possession for the majority of the third quarter and held a 4-1 shot advantage and 5-1 corner advantage but the Knights were able to hold onto a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Mel Mercado had her blast from the top of the circle saved in the 52nd minute. LVC finally broke through in the 56th minute off a penalty corner attempt. Johnson inserted the ball to Long at the top of the circle. The ball made its way to Arnold who took a shot on the left side that was saved by the goalie. Johnson raced in and knocked the loose ball into the back of the cage for the equalizer. LVC kept the pressure up after the goal as the clock winded down. They nearly scored in the 58th minute as Angstadt's shot was just kicked away. And the game headed into an extra session.

A late card in regulation had the Dutchmen playing a woman down to begin the overtime period. Arcadia earned a corner and Weidenhammer came up with a big save followed by the defense blocking a shot.
