Women’s Basketball Dominates the Paint to Defeat Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Lebanon Valley Women's Basketball team scored 42 points in the paint to earn a 63-32 road victory at Centenary University on Wednesday evening in New Jersey.
 
Centenary (4-1) scored the first three points of the game before Cristina Fernandez found Riley Hevelow open for a layup. Hevelow then grabbed a rebound at the other end and dished the ball up to Fernandez for a fastbreak layup. The Cyclones called a timeout following aa Hevelow jumper that put LVC (3-1) up 6-3 a little over three minutes in. The Cyclones went on a 7-2 run over the next five minutes to take the lead. Kailey Eckhart tied the game up with a pair of free throws and then Brielle Reidinger gave the Dutchmen a 12-10 lead heading into the second quarter with a layup.
 
LVC broke open the game in the second quarter outscoring the Cyclones 20-5. Reidinger and Jordan Zimmerman knocked down back-to-back jumpers in the paint to start the scoring. Centenary scored on a pair of free throws with 6:40 on the clock to cut it to 16-12. Zimmerman knocked down a three and then Fernandez scored on a driving layup. Elise Balmer got the lead into double digits with a free throw and then Eckhart scored a layup to give the Dutchmen a 24-12 advantage. The Cyclones stopped the run with a three-pointer with three minutes to go in the half. Fernandez had a pair of layups, Reidinger knocked down a pair of free throws, and Hevelow scored underneath the basket to make it 32-15.
 
The Dutchmen came out of the locker room just as strong as Reidinger scored down low while being fouled and then hit her free throw. The teams traded buckets until Fernandez scored two quick layups with a Zimmerman steal in between to push the lead to 45-21 with five minutes to go in the quarter. Hevelow and Fernandez sandwiched a Cyclone bucket underneath before Hevelow knocked down a three to increase the lead to 28. Both teams knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute as the Dutchmen took a 55-27 lead into the fourth.
 
Reidinger scored the first four points of the fourth quarter as the Dutchmen held the Cyclones without a point until a pair of free throws a little over three minutes into the quarter. Abbie Reed grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the putback to give the Dutchmen a 32-point advantage. Balmer scored LVC's final two points of the game on a layup to make it 63-30. Centenary had their only made field goal of quarter with 2:45 left to set the final score.
 
Inside the Box
  • The Dutchmen defense allowed a season-low 32 points as Centenary shot 19.6 percent from the field.
  • Reidinger recorded her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The junior had three offensive rebounds and dished out two assists.
  • Hevelow scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. She shot 50 percent from the floor.
  • Fernandez was the third in double figures with 14 points, three steals, and three rebounds.
  • Reed was second on the team in rebounds with 10 and scored three points.
  • Zimmerman had five points and five rebounds.
  • LVC had a season-high 47 rebounds and outscored the Cyclones in the paint 42-16.
  • The Dutchmen had 21 points off 18 Centenary turnovers, including a season-high nine steals. Offensively, the Dutchmen had a season-low eight turnovers.

Lebanon Valley will be off until next Tuesday when they host Elizabethtown College inside Sorrentino Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
