Men’s Basketball Rallies to Defeat Lancaster Bible in Overtime

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Men's Basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit with seven minutes left to force overtime and then defeat host Lancaster Bible College 87-84 on Wednesday evening at the Horst Athletic Center in Lancaster.
 
The Chargers scored the first nine points of the game on their first four offensive possessions in the opening two minutes. Ryan Harder scored the Dutchmen's first points on a jumper following an offensive rebound. LBC increased their lead to 13-2 before Jason Penn knocked down a three with 15 minutes to go in the half. Lancaster Bible would extend the lead to 14 points on a three-pointer before Penn hit another three, stole the ball and Evan Smith found Evin Timochenko streaking down the court for a fastbreak layup. The teams traded scores over the next five minutes as LVC got the lead down to eight,but LBC was able to get the advantage back up to 14. The Chargers took their largest lead of the half at 46-31 with 2:34 on the clock. The Dutchmen finished the half strong as Kyle Tang hit a pair of free throws and Tyson Hofsass had a late steal and hit two free throws to cut the lead to 11 headed into the break.
 
Timochenko began the scoring in the second half with a layup. He scored six of the first eight points of the half to bring LVC within seven at 48-41 as the Chargers called a timeout. Smith hit a jumper to bring the lead down to five before Lancaster Bible scored the next six points. The Chargers got the lead all the way up to a game-high 16 points at 63-47 with 13 minutes to go. Karson Pavlik and Tang scored the next six points to cut it to 10. After a LBC bucket, Timochenko and Penn scored layups to get the advantage down to single digits. The lead was at 10 with 7:15 when Wil Laskowski hit a free throw, Hofsass knocked down a three, and Harder scored on a jumper to make it a four-point game. The Dutchmen made it a one-possession game with three minutes left as Harder scored on a driving layup. Penn tied the game up at 73 with 39 seconds left on a layup. The Chargers missed a three-pointer giving the Dutchmen back the ball with 10 seconds left and a chance to win in regulation. Tang drove baseline and his driving layup attempt went off the backboard and off the rim as the game went to overtime.
 
LVC scored first in overtime as Timochenko knocked down a jumper in the paint. LBC responded at the other end before Tang found Harder open for a three to put LVC up 78-75. The Dutchmen led by three with two minutes to go following a Hofsass layup. LVC got a stop and then Timochenko scored on a layup to make it a five-point game. The Dutchmen forced a turnover. Penn was fouled and knocked down both free throws. The Chargers fought back and hit a pair of threes to make it a one-point game with 26 seconds left. After a turnover, Tang grabbed a rebound and after getting the ball past midcourt Hofsass was fouled. He calmly knocked down both free throws and a last second heave was off the mark to give LVC another road victory to begin the year.
 
Inside the Box
  • Harder and Timochenko had double-doubles to lead the Dutchmen. Harder had a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Timochenko added 18 points and 12 rebounds including five on the offensive end.
  • Penn led the comeback charge with 16 points including a perfect 6-6 at the line. The guard also had five rebounds and a blocked shot.
  • Tang finished with nine points, four steals, three assists, and four rebounds.
  • Hofsass was 2-2 from the field and 4-6 at the line for nine points. He added three steals to his stat line.
  • LVC shot nearly 60 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 49.2-percent.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will finish the three-game road stretch to begin the year on Saturday with a trip to Huntingdon where they will face Juniata College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Memorial Gymnasium.
