Dutchmen Men’s Soccer Ties Misericordia in MAC Freedom Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Will Burton netted a goal for the Lebanon Valley College Men's Soccer team, as the program tied Misericordia University in a 1-1 defensive battle during its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Herbert Field.

The defenses of both the Dutchmen (6-4-1, 0-0-1 MAC Freedom) and the Cougars (2-5-2, 0-0-1 MAC Freedom) were dominant in the first half, keeping each other scoreless. Lebanon Valley took the first shot of the afternoon, as Lucas Strange tallied a shot that went over the net. The teams then proceeded to go back and forth for the next 11:25, as neither squad took a shot over this stretch. 

Misericordia recorded the first shot on goal of the night at the 13:53 mark, but goalkeeper Dalton Fitterling was there to make the save for LVC. The Flying Dutchmen worked to generate offensive opportunities as the opening half progressed, as Ben Kolarek took a shot that went over the net 20:23 into the game before Ethan Groff registered a shot that went to the right at the 28:01 mark. 

The Cougars countered with a shot on goal 33:12 into the stanza, which resulted in Fitterling's second save. Lebanon Valley kept sending shots toward the net as the contest neared the end of the first, as Simon Grimes took a shot that went to the right at the 38:55 mark before Nolan Ross tallied a shot that went to the left with 1:42 remaining. The programs entered halftime in a 0-0 tie. 

The defense continued to be the story early in the second half, as neither squad recorded a shot on goal for over 17 minutes at the start. The Dutchmen then opened the scoring 62:28 into the match, taking a 1-0 lead over Misericordia. The program got on the board with a clutch shot by Burton that ended up in the upper-right side of the net, courtesy of an assist by Connor Given

Lebanon Valley kept working to create scoring chances as the second stanza went on, as Groff and Kolarek each took a shot that was saved within a period of 59 seconds that began in the 72nd minute. Charlie Kramer also contributed to these efforts, as he logged a shot that was saved at the 76:36 mark. The Cougars then scored 78:57 into the contest, tying it up at 1-1 on a goal by Shane Macko. 

The Flying Dutchmen continued to battle as the match neared the end, taking four shots in the final eight minutes. One of these attempts was a shot on goal by Nathan Prex that was saved at the 84:38 mark. Misericordia also worked to find the net, tallying a shot that deflected off the crossbar with just 1:16 to go. Ultimately, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

  • Given tallied his first assist of the fall, which also marks his first point of the year.

The Dutchmen will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, as the program will host Franklin & Marshall College at Herbert Field.
