Timochenko Leads Men’s Basketball in Overtime Battle Against Arcadia

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Evin Timochenko posted his seventh double-double of the season for the Lebanon Valley College men's basketball team, as the program dropped a hard-fought, 64-57 contest in overtime against Arcadia University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Sorrentino Gymnasium. 

The Dutchmen and the Knights went back and forth offensively early in the first half, trading baskets until the score was even at 6-6 with 13:56 remaining. Lebanon Valley scored during this stretch on a pull-up jumper and a layup by Luis Garcia, along with a layup by Wil Laskowski. Arcadia followed this with an 11-3 run, taking a 17-9 lead with 9:31 to go. LVC countered seven seconds later, as Braden Bohannon made a layup to make it a 17-11 game. 

The Knights then scored six straight points, taking a 23-11 advantage with 5:52 to play in the opening stanza. The Dutchmen responded with a 5-0 run, narrowing the score to 23-16 with 3:03 left. This offensive stretch by Lebanon Valley included a turnaround jumper by Ryan Harder before Evin Timochenko also connected on a turnaround jump shot and made a free throw. Arcadia followed this by closing out the half with a 4-3 run, taking a 27-19 lead into halftime. LVC scored the last points of the stanza, as Laskowski knocked down a pull-up jumper with just five seconds left on the clock. 

The Dutchmen started the second half strong, posting a 13-5 run in the first 6:36 to tie the contest 32-32. In this stretch, Evan Smith scored five points, Timochenko scored four, and Harder and Garcia each scored two. Lebanon Valley evened the score after Smith connected on a three-pointer and Timochenko made a pair of free throws. Arcadia responded with a free throw to go up by a point, but LVC answered right back by claiming a 34-33 lead with 11:13 remaining. The squad went ahead on a turnaround jumper by Garcia. 

The programs continued to battle as the second half progressed, exchanging points until the game was even at 38-38 with 7:42 to go. Timochenko later put Lebanon Valley ahead on a turnaround jumper with 5:24 left, but Arcadia then made a three-pointer to go up by a tally. The Dutchmen promptly answered back, as Garcia knocked down a clutch step-back three to give the squad a 43-41 lead with 4:32 remaining. Arcadia countered with a layup to make it a 43-43 contest with just over four minutes to play. 

The Flying Dutchmen had an answer once again, delivering four straight points to take a 47-43 advantage with 2:23 to go. Timochenko scored each of LVC's points during this span, making a jumper in the paint and a pair of free throws. The Knights responded with a 6-2 stretch during the final minutes of regulation, tying the game at 49-49 and sending it to overtime. 

Arcadia began the overtime frame with five consecutive points, taking a 54-49 lead with a three and dunk in the first 1:48. Timochenko then made a pair of layups during a 4-2 stretch for Lebanon Valley, narrowing the score to 56-53 with 1:18 remaining in OT. The Knights followed this with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, extending their advantage to 61-53 with 31 seconds to go. The Dutchmen continued to battle until the clock expired, finishing the game on a 4-3 run. In this span, Timochenko and Harder each made layups. Ultimately, Arcadia closed out the game by a score of 64-57. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Timochenko recorded his seventh double-double of the campaign, leading all scorers with 20 points while leading the Dutchmen with 12 rebounds. The junior forward also led the squad with a block and he tied for the team lead in assists with two.
  • Garcia led Lebanon Valley with four steals, which ties his season high. The graduate student guard also registered 12 points, three rebounds, and an assist.  
  • Harder tallied nine rebounds, eight points, and a steal. The junior guard's two assists also tied for the most on the team. 
  • Smith scored five points with a three-pointer, while also logging a rebound.
  • The Flying Dutchmen out-rebounded the Knights 43 to 37, marking their season-high in rebounds. 
  • LVC scored 30 points in the paint during the contest. 
Up Next 
The Dutchmen will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, as the program will travel to take on King's College (Pa.) at McGrane Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
