Field Hockey Delivers Strong Defense Against Gettysburg

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– The Lebanon Valley College field hockey team dropped a 1-0 defensive battle to Gettysburg College on Wednesday night at Arnold Field. 

Both the Flying Dutchmen (1-2) and the Bullets (2-1) managed to limit scoring opportunities for the opposition. Lebanon Valley delivered a stellar defensive effort, holding Gettysburg to just two total shots in the game. LVC's defense kept the opposition from taking a shot in the first half of the contest. 

Lebanon Valley recorded a shot on goal 11:57 into the first period, but the attempt by junior forward Lexi Ward was ultimately saved by Gettysburg's goalkeeper. Both programs made efforts to get its offenses going throughout the first two periods, but the defenses continually stifled attempts toward the cage. The Flying Dutchmen and Bullets entered halftime with a 0-0 stalemate. 

The beginning of the third period followed a similar pattern, as neither team got on the scoreboard until nearly 14 minutes into the frame. Gettysburg then opened the scoring 43:57 into the contest, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by forward Bella Bonazinga. 
Lebanon Valley continued to deliver a strong effort during the remainder of the game, as the team took three shots in the fourth period. Ultimately, neither team sent a shot to the back of the cage during the final 15 minutes of play. 

Inside the Box Score:
  • Ward and sophomore forward Gracie Johnson led Lebanon Valley's offense with two shots each. 
  • First-year Claire Weidenhammer, senior Alana Antonello and sophomore Rebecca Lane also took shots. 
  • Sophomore Lauren Jancsarics recorded a save.
  • LVC's defense limited Gettysburg to just two shots during the contest. 
  • The Flying Dutchmen recorded eight penalty corners while the Bullets had two.

Lebanon Valley will return to the field at 2 p.m. Sept. 9, as the program will travel to take on St. Lawrence University on the first day of the William Smith Classic at McCooey Field.
