Stepler Dishes Out 47 Assists in Victory Over York

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– Junior Robyn Stepler recorded 47 assists during the Lebanon Valley College volleyball team's 3-1 victory over York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday night at Sorrentino Gymnasium. 
 
Lebanon Valley (5-4) defeated York (6-3) in four highly competitive sets, picking up its second straight win. The Spartans took the first set 25-21, but the Flying Dutchmen won the remaining sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23 to secure the victory. LVC received contributions from several players, with Stepler and senior outside hitter Taylor McInerney delivering impact performances.
 
The Flying Dutchmen and the Spartans battled throughout the first set, as the largest margin between the teams was just four points. Lebanon Valley trailed York 11-8, but the squad went on a three-point run to tie it at 11-all. LVC evened the score on a kill by senior Kelli Heffer, an attack error and a bad set. The Spartans took a four-point advantage later in the set, but the Dutchmen delivered a 4-1 stretch that trimmed their deficit to 21-20. The team got back into it on a service error, two attack errors and a kill by Heffer. York went on to close the set with a 4-1 run, going ahead 1-0 in the match. 
 
Lebanon Valley got its offense rolling early in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead against York. McInerney recorded a pair of kills during this stretch, while Stepler delivered a service ace and first-year Teaguen Reynolds also had a kill. The Spartans later evened the set at 9-9, but the Flying Dutchmen answered back with 6-1 run to reclaim the five-point advantage. This dominant stretch was the result of four kills by McInerney and two attack errors. York responded with three consecutive points, but a five-point run by LVC gave the squad a 20-13 lead. The Dutchmen went on to close the second set by a score of 25-17, tying the match at 1-1. 
 
LVC got out to another solid start in the third set, taking a 9-5 advantage early. The program's first nine points came on kills by sophomore Mattea Penner and McInenerney, as well as three service errors and four attack errors. Lebanon Valley posted a key 3-1 run after it was already up by five, taking a 22-15 lead. The squads then traded points during the remainder of the set, with the Flying Dutchmen coming away with the 25-18 victory. Lebanon Valley took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set of the match. 
 
The Dutchmen and Spartans went back-and-forth during the fourth set, trading the lead four times. York took an early 9-7 advantage, but Lebanon Valley answered right back with three straight kills by McInerney to tie the set at 9-9. The Spartans later led 20-17, but the Dutchmen delivered another three-point run to tie the match at 20-all. LVC evened the set on a kill by McInerney and two attack errors. The programs then traded the next six points to advance the score to 23-23. The Flying Dutchmen took the next two points on attack errors to win the set 25-23, securing the 3-1 match victory. 
 
Inside the Box Score:
  • Stepler led LVC with 47 assists, while recording the team's only service ace. She also tied Reynolds for the team's most blocks, tallying three. 
  • McInerney led the Flying Dutchmen with 27 kills and 16 digs.
  • Heffer and Penner both had nine kills during the match. 
  • Lebanon Valley recorded 56 digs, while York had 44. 
  • Senior libero Kasey Thomas registered 15 digs. 
  • Senior middle hitter Olivia Nace made two blocks.

Lebanon Valley will return to action at 7 p.m. Sept. 20, as the program will host Arcadia University in its conference opener at Sorrentino Gymnasium.
