ANNVILLE, Pa. – First baseman
Logan Brewer stole the show on Saturday, hitting two home runs and driving in five runs during the Lebanon Valley College baseball team's doubleheader split with York College of Pennsylvania. The Dutchmen took the first game 2-1 and dropped the second contest 6-4, which was called after five innings because of inclement weather in the area.
Game 1
The Flying Dutchmen (20-14-1, 16-4 MAC Commonwealth) notched their 20th victory of the season behind a long ball from the first baseman and dominant pitching. Brewer's sixth home run of the year put a pair of runs on the scoreboard early, which proved to be enough for the win. The lead provided by the first baseman's long ball was preserved by
Shane Stossel's stellar start on the mound, in which he blanked the Spartans (17-16, 12-8 MAC Commonwealth) over the first five innings of the game.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead over York. Brewer launched a two-run homer over the right-center field fence, bringing home left fielder
Dave Mangold. Stossel would then cruise through the next three frames, maintain LVC's two-run advantage until he turned the game over to the bullpen.
Reliever
Hunter Tipton entered the game in the sixth inning, throwing a scoreless frame to begin his outing. The Spartans attempted to tie the game in the final inning of play, getting on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. York broke its offensive silence with an RBI double to right field, trimming LVC's lead to 2-1. This would ultimately stand as the final score, as Tipton would induce a groundout and a pop out from the next two batters to secure the win.
Inside the Box Score
- Five members of Lebanon Valley's lineup picked up hits in the first game.
- Brewer recorded two hits, including the game-deciding two-run home run.
- Shortstop Nico Santoro logged a base hit for the third consecutive game.
- Stossel picked up his fifth victory of the year after five scoreless innings of work.
- Tipton was credited with his first save of the season.
- The win clinched the team's sixth series win of the year and gave the conference-leading Dutchmen a spot in the conference tournament for the third consecutive year.
Game 2
Lebanon Valley (20-15-1, 16-5 MAC Commonwealth) put together more quality at-bats in the second game, being led by Brewer with another home run and three RBIs. LVC ultimately fell to York (18-16, 13-8 MAC Commonwealth) in the second game, as the opposition claimed the lead early and remained ahead because of timely hitting.
The Spartans struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run homer to left field. The Dutchmen responded in the bottom half of the frame, narrowing their deficit to 2-1. Brewer got the bats going in this one, crushing a solo blast over the right-center field wall.
York answered back in the top of the third, extending its lead to 5-1 on a two-run double to center field and an RBI single to left. Lebanon Valley then put a dent in this deficit in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Right fielder
Pete Botbyl grounded out to first base, allowing
Andrew Miles to trot home from third. Later in the frame, Brewer continued his big day at the plate by lining a two-run double to center field, plating Santoro and
Jace Fetterman.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning, extending their lead to 6-4 with a single to right field. This would end up being the final score, as the game was called due to weather after the Flying Dutchmen batted in the bottom half of the frame.
