Santoro Records Four Hits in Series Opener Against Widener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior shortstop Nico Santoro recorded his fourth four-hit game of the season as the Lebanon Valley College baseball team fell to Widener University 10-6 on Friday afternoon, dropping the series opener at McGill Field.

The Flying Dutchmen (17-12-1, 13-3 MAC Commonwealth) and the Pride (15-16, 9-7 MAC Commonwealth) put on an offensive clinic, combining for 16 runs on 24 hits. Lebanon Valley put together several quality plate appearances, accounting for 12 hits and nine walks. Ultimately, Widener jumped out to an early lead and rallied several times throughout the game to preserve the advantage.

The Pride opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The club crossed the plate on an RBI groundout to first base and an RBI double to left field. The Dutchmen then trimmed their deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, as designated hitter Luke Blair hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Logan Brewer. Widener answered back in the top of the third inning, plating a pair of runs to make it a 4-1 game. The Pride extended their advantage on a double to right field and a single up the middle. Lebanon Valley got those runs back in the bottom half the inning, narrowing Widener's lead to 4-3. Brewer lined a double into the left-center field gap, driving in Nico Santoro. Third baseman Ethan O'Loughlin followed this by torching a single to right field, bringing home Shane Stossel

The Pride tacked on another run in the top of the fourth on a single up the middle and put three runs on the board in the fifth inning, taking an 8-3 lead. Widener crossed the plate in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk, a single and a double play with a runner on third base. LVC continued to battle at the plate in the bottom half of the inning, as right fielder Dave Mangold drew a free pass with the bases-loaded to score Stossel and make it an 8-4 contest. The clubs then traded zeros until the top of the eighth inning, when the Pride extended their lead to 9-4 on a wild pitch. Lebanon Valley refused to go down quietly, trimming its deficit to 9-6 against Widener with a couple of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Justin Ranker walked with the bases loaded, plating Santoro. Mangold then hit a ground ball to shortstop and reached on a fielding error, allowing Jace Fetterman to score. The Pride added another run in the top of the ninth on a triple to right-center field, taking a 10-6 lead. This would hold as the final score.
