ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley softball team gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about on Sunday afternoon as the Dutchmen swept visiting Alvernia University by scores of 6-1 and 14-5 at the LVC Softball Park in the first two home games and conference games of the season.
Game One
Alvernia (7-4, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board in the top of the first inning on a walk and double. LVC (10-3, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) struck right back in the bottom half as
Sam Burns led off with an infield single to shortstop and score two batters later on a Julia Criag double to right. Craig then scored the go-ahead run on an
Erin Pattillo single to right. The Dutchmen increased the lead in the third as Lindsay McCurdy reached on an error and made her way to third. She then scored on a groundout to second by
Kiersten White.
Kylie Balthaser led off the fourth with a double down the third base line and scored two batters later on a Burns single through the left side. The Dutchmen tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth as Balthaser beat out a grounder to short,
Alden Partyka doubled to right, and then Burns hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Lexi Smith then drove in Partyka with a single to center.
Inside the Box Score
- Burns had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored in the leadoff spot.
- Balthaser also had two hits and scored twice.
- The Dutchmen hit three doubles in the game and stole three bases. Burns had two stolen bases while McCurdy had one.
- Jordan Walter was fantastic after a slow start with eight strikeouts and one run allowed on four hits and a walk. She earned the complete game victory to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Game Two
McCurdy began the scoring in the first as she hit a triple to right field that scored Craig. She scored on an overthrow by the second baseman to give the Dutchmen (11-3, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) a 2-0 lead. The Golden Wolves (7-5, 0-4 MAC Commonwealth) scored a run in the second and a run in the third to even things up at two. LVC responded with a big eight run inning in the bottom half to break the game open. Burns began the rally with a double down the line in left.
Lexi Smith hit a bunt single to third and then advanced to second. Craig and Mccurdy hit back-to-back singles on the first pitch to plate two runs. Balthaser loaded the bases with a single to left and then
Jessica Truitt had a big pinch-hit two-RBI single to right. In her second at-bat of the inning Burns knocked in a run with a single to center. Smith then made it 9-2 with a two-RBI single to left. Craig knocked in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle.
The Golden Wolves cut the lead to 10-3 with a leadoff home run to right in the fourth. Mackenze Willey got the run back in the bottom half with a single to left to score
Erin Pattillo. Burns then hit a triple to center knocking in two runs and scored on an overthrow into the Alvernia dugout. Alvernia responded with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the inning to set the final score.
Inside the Box Score
- Burns had three hits, three runs scored, and three RBI.
- Craig and McCurdy both had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.
- Smith knocked in two runs and scored a run with two hits in the game.
- Willey also had two hits.
- Nine different Dutchmen recorded a hit.
- Erin Sinatra got the win in the circle pitching 4.2 innings with five strikeouts.
- Alicia Gotts got the final out of the game and faced three batters.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be back at the Softball Park on Tuesday when they host Susquehanna University for a pair of non-conference games. Game one is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
