Softball Ends Spring Trip with Sweep of New Paltz and Babson

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lebanon Valley softball team rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat 20th-ranked Babson College 4-2 on Saturday afternoon to complete a sweep of their opponents on the team's final day in Florida. LVC started the day with a 4-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz.
 
Game One vs. New Paltz
The Dutchmen (7-2) played great defense holding the Hawks (3-2) off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. LVC got on the board in the third on a double steal attempt with two outs by Lexi Smith and Sam Burns. Burns slid into second just ahead of the tag while Burns sprinted home on the throw down for the first run of the game. The Dutchmen added to the lead in the fourth as Anna Marie Hockman knocked in Jessica Truitt. Lindsey McCurdy made it 4-0 with a bases-loaded double to right center in the fifth that scored two runs. The Hawks scored an unearned run in the sixth.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Smith had her third multi-hit game of the season with a 3-3 day at the plate. She was busy at second base making seven assists and one putout.
  • Truitt had two hits and scored a run.
  • Julia Forsythe was the third Dutchman with a two-hit game.
  • Burns stole two bases and scored two runs.
  • McCurdy knocked in two runs on her double.
  • Jordan Walter pitched the complete game with six strikeouts to earn her second win of the season. She allowed four hits and no walks and forced 13 groundouts.
Game Two vs. No. 20 Babson
Babson (3-4) manufactured a run in the first inning to take the early lead. Alicia Gotts kept the Beavers off the board until the fifth inning when they were able to score on a wild pitch. The Dutchmen scored four runs in the seventh to stun Babson in the Beavers first game of their spring break trip. Megan Heard singled to center to start the rally. After a Kiersten White walk, Nicole Kratz singled up the middle to score the first run of the inning. Sam Burns then hit a bloop single to score Erin Pattillo. Two batters later Julia Craig delivered the big blow with a two-out double to right center to score Burns and Danni Holmes with the go-ahead runs. Erin Sinatra, who relieved Gotta in the sixth pitched a scoreless bottom half to give LVC the win.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Craig was one of seven Dutchmen to record a hit with the biggest hit of the game. Her two RBI double gave LVC the lead.
  • Burns had a hit, knocked in a run, and scored a run.
  • Lindsey McCurdy, Maddy Gronback, Heard, White, and Kratz all had a hit each.
  • Gotts pitched five innings with three strikeouts. She allowed two runs on five hits and one walk.
  • Sinatra earned the win pitching the final two innings. She allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will have a week off before returning to action on March 21 at Moravian University. The first game of the doubleheader in Bethlehem is scheduled for 3 p.m.
