ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team recovered brilliantly from a slow start to defeat third-seeded Arcadia University 3-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Semifinal match on Wednesday evening at Sorrentino Gymnasium in Annville.
The second-seeded Dutchmen (17-11) will play for a conference title for the first time since 2011 after avenging a 2017 MAC Commonwealth Semifinal loss to the Knights (12-17). Arcadia scored 10 consecutive points early in the match to take an 11-2 lead in the opening set. The Dutchmen slowly clawed their way back into the set and after a block by
Margaret Cole, an ace by
Abigail Souder, and an attack error, LVC found themselves down just one point at 18-17. Back-to-back kills by Cole and
Taylor McInerney tied the match up at 19. Arcadia scored six of the final nine points to win the set 25-22 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
LVC came out firing in set two and built an 8-2 advantage behind three kills by McInerney, a couple of Knight attack errors, and an ace by McInerney. Arcadia was able to string together a rally to cut the lead to 9-7. The Dutchmen responded with five straight points with Souder serving to being the advantage up to seven. The lead blossomed up to 10 following two kills by McInerney and one by
Mattea Penner to make it 22-12.
Libby Lindau had a pair of kills to put the Dutchmen within a point of tying the match and then McInerney gave LVC a 25-17 set win with her eighth kill of the set.
The teams battled back-and-forth to start the third set with the Knights holding an 5-3 advantage. They were able to get the lead up to 10-5 before
Teaguen Reynolds ended the run with a kill to start a Dutchmen rally. Penner and Cole blocked an attack, Penner recorded a kill and two points later Souder had a service ace to cut the lead to 11-10. The Knights were able to stay ahead and took a 16-14 lead before LVC used a decisive 9-2 run to put them on the doorsteps of taking the set. Penner had a pair of kills during the run while Souder added another service ace. LVC took the set 25-20 following a kill by Cole on set point.
Arcadia scored five of the first seven points in the fourth set to take the early lead. LVC tied the set up at seven following a pair of kills by Penner. The Knights responded with a five-point rally forcing LVC to call a timeout during the rally. Arcadia kept the pressure on the Dutchmen and built their lead up to 19-14. The comeback effort began with an assisted block by Reynolds and Lindau to make it 19-15. The Knights were able to get a point before LVC rattled off eight consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead. Arcadia was forced into a trio of attack errors before Reynolds had back-to-back aces to tie the match up at 20. Cole gave LVC the lead as she jumped all over a loose ball near the net for a point. Penner closed the rally with a pair of kills. The Knights were able to stop the run with a kill. Cole put the Dutchmen on match point with her eighth kill of the night and then Souder ended things with her fourth service ace.
Inside the Box
- LVC won the first point of all four sets.
- McInerney had 21 kills to give her 570 on the season and put her within two kills of 1,000 in an LVC uniform. The Annville native has 1,065 kills in her collegiate career.
- Robyn Stepler had a huge game with 42 assists. The junior had 40-plus assists in a match for the fifth time this season. She recorded her 900th career assist with her final assist of the night. Stepler also had four block assists in the match.
- Cole led the defensive effort with seven total blocks on one solo block and six assisted blocks. She also had eight kills.
- Penner reached double-digit kills with 10 and had 13 digs.
- Kasey Thomas led the Dutchmen with 16 digs and added two aces.
- Souder had four of the team's nine aces.
- Reynolds had three kills, and four total blocks.
- The Dutchmen recorded 75 digs in the match which is tied for their second-most all season. The 11 total blocks equals the team's most in a match this year.

LVC will head to Hoboken, New Jersey on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start in the MAC Freedom Championship against top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks cruised to a 3-0 victory over fourth-seeded Misericordia University in the other semifinal on Wednesday evening.
