ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team battled valiantly in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship Final, but the program dropped a close 1-0 game against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday at Herbert Field.
Lebanon Valley (13-2-4, 5-0-2 MAC Freedom) posted a strong defensive effort against Stevens (11-2-5, 5-0-2 MAC Freedom), limiting the squad's offensive opportunities. The Ducks found the net in the first half, but the Dutchmen kept the team in check during the remainder of the contest. LVC held Stevens to just five shots on goal in the game. The program created several scoring chances as will, sending 15 total shots towards the net.
The programs went back-and-forth defensively during the first half, as the game was scoreless for most of the stanza. Senior goalkeeper
Dalton Fitterling played a key role in the keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard early, making three saves through the first 28 minutes. He made two clutch saves within a span of nine seconds during the 28
th minute, helping preserve the score.
The Flying Dutchmen generated some scoring chances of their own, registering four total shots during the first 40 minutes of play. Sophomore
Nathan Prex contributed to these attempts, taking a shot on goal 26:02 into the contest. Stevens then opened the scoring with just 11 seconds remaining in the opening half, taking a 1-0 lead. Coming off a corner kick, Fritz Kabeiseman scored a goal on a header to put the team ahead. The Ducks took this one-goal advantage into halftime.
The second half was also dominated by defense, as both programs prevented each other from finding the net. Lebanon Valley limited Stevens to six shots with just one shot on goal during the final 40 minutes. Fitterling made another important save 61:05 into the game on a shot by Kabeiseman.
The Dutchmen were also aggressive offensively throughout the final stanza, taking 11 shots with five attempts on goal. Prex continued to create scoring chances for the program, taking three shots within the final 18 minutes of play. Ultimately, neither team scored during the remainder of the game.
