HERSHEY, Pa. – Graduate student
Katie Pounder netted two goals in the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team's first victory of the season, as the squad defeated Albertus Magnus College 5-2 on Saturday at Hersheypark Arena.
Lebanon Valley (1-1-0) delivered a strong effort against Albertus Magnus (0-3-0), getting the job done on both sides of the ice. The Falcons scored a goal in the first period, but the Flying Dutchmen answered back with three goals in the second frame to go ahead. Albertus Magnus then found the net again in the third period, while LVC added a pair of goals to help secure the win.
The Falcons opened the scoring 3:59 into the first period, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Maddie Sheffield. The Dutchmen were effective on the defensive end during the remainder of the first period, keeping the opposition off the board in this stretch. First-year goaltender
Jorja Fisher made 10 saves in the frame, keeping LVC within one.
The Flying Dutchmen got on the board just 31 seconds into the second period, tying the contest at 1-1. Sophomore
Tiffany Anderson evened the score with the program's first goal of the year, courtesy of an assist by senior
Jess Dawe. Lebanon Valley found the net again 8:39 into the period, taking a 2-1 advantage over Albertus Magnus. Pounder put the squad ahead with a shot past the goaltender, following assists by sophomore
Alexa Spiers and Dawe. The Dutchmen capped off the second frame on a goal with just under 33 seconds to go, making it a 3-1 contest. First-year
Laura Radford put the squad up by two with her first collegiate goal, after an assist by Spiers. This would also prove to be the game-winning goal for the program.
Lebanon Valley kept its offense rolling at the beginning of the third period, extending its lead to 4-1 just 1:28 into the frame. Pounder recorded her second goal of the afternoon with a shot that got past the goaltender, following an assist by senior
Grace Mayer. Albertus Magnus responded with a goal by Ariana Martin 7:17 into the frame. The Dutchmen then added an insurance goal 9:34 into the final period, making it a 5-1 contest. Junior
Erin Yorke delivered LVC's fifth goal of the day after an assist by Mayer. This would stand as the final score, as neither team found the net during the remainder of the game.
