Men’s Ice Hockey Rallies for First Win of Season

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Lebanon Valley men's ice hockey team scored five unanswered goals to defeat SUNY Morrisville 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Morrisville, New York.
 
LVC (1-1-0) and Morrisville (0-1-0) battled through a scoreless first period in which both teams took 10 shots. The Mustangs had two power play opportunities in the period while the Dutchmen had one. Morrisville broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period with a power play goal on their fourth extra man opportunity of the game. The hosts were able to make it 2-0 a little under two minutes later with their second goal of the period.
 
The Dutchmen took advantage of a pair of power play opportunities late in the period to tie the game up heading into the final period. Blake Tosto started the scoring with his second goal of the weekend off an assist by Artem Mikhaylov at 16:04. Cade Freer tied the game up with 1:31 left in the period off an assist by Jordan Stear.
 
Stear recorded his second assist of the game just 36 into the final period as Jered Stevenson lit the lamp to give LVC the lead. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on and were able to add another goal at 7:41 as Darion Benchich scored off an assist by Brenden Yingling. The Mustangs pulled their goalie late trying to fight back from a two-goal deficit and the Dutchmen took advantage of the empty net as Tosto put away his second goal of the game at 18:05. Yingling and Benchich assisted on the goal.
 
Inside the Box
  • Tosto finished off the weekend with two more goals to give him 23 in his career. The captain took four shots and won 14 faceoffs.
  • Stevenson recorded his second point of the weekend with the ninth goal of his career and third game-winning goal.
  • Benchich had a multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Stear and Yingling had two assists each.
  • Cameron Croteau won 13 faceoffs and lost nine.
  • Chris Branch made 36 saves in goal to earn his first career win.
  • The Dutchmen were 2-4 on power plays and 5-6 on penalty kills. 
Up Next
LVC will be back in New York next weekend to begin conference play. The Dutchmen will head up to Rochester to face Nazareth University on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start at 4 p.m.
