HERSHEY, Pa. – Ty Franchi had a strong night in net and
Cameron Croteau found the back of the net as the Lebanon Valley men's ice hockey team played second-ranked Utica University to a hard-fought 6-1 decision in favor of the Pioneers.
The Dutchmen (2-12-2, 1-9-1) held Utica (13-2-1, 11-0-0) off the scoreboard for the first 13:57 of the game behind strong play from Franchi in between the pipes and a focused defensive effort in front of him. Franchi stopped the first 14 shots he faced, and the Dutchmen blocked an additional nine shots in the first 14 minutes of action. The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission with a goal with nine seconds to go in the first period.
LVC came out of the break with
Blake Tosto,
Mason Proskin, and
Dylan Miller all putting shots on goal in the first 98 seconds. Utica responded with their third goal of the game at 3:45 of the period. A couple minutes later the Pioneers scored again to make it 4-0. The Dutchmen nearly got on the board when Miller saw his shot deflect off the pipe and back into play. LVC had a good opportunity to get on the board with a two-man advantage a little over midway through the period. The Dutchmen pushed for a goal taking four shots but two went wide and the other two were knocked away by the Pioneer goaltender. The Pioneers increased the lead to five with a power play goal in the final minute before Croteau struck just 13 seconds later with a rocket from just inside the blue line. Miller and
Eric Malcarney assisted on the goal. The Dutchmen played the Pioneers tough in the third period with Franchi stopping 17 of the 18 shots he faced in the period.
